   1960年録音のフレディ・ハバードの『Open Sesame』は単なる名盤ではない。歴史が変わる瞬間をとらえた作品なのだ。それまで無名だったこのトランペット奏者は、まだ駆け出しの頃だった。ピアニストのマッコイ・タイナーしかり（彼はこのすぐ後ジョン・コルトレーンとの運命的な出会いを迎える）。実際、このレコーディング時点で一番有名だったのは、ベースのサム・ジョーンズであり、彼がその後キャノンボール・アダレイやオスカー・ピーターソンと競演していったのに対し、ハバードとタイナーはこの作品の後にジャズ界の大物となっていったのである。本来ならテナー・サックスのティナ・ブルックスもそうなるべきであったのだが、この優秀なプレイヤー（今作の「But Beautiful」でのプレイは秀逸）は正当な評価を得ることなく、1974年に42才の若さでひっそりとこの世を去っていった。ハバード作の「Hub's Nub」やブルックス作のタイトル曲2テイク、そして「Gypsy Blue」は素晴らしく、今作のハイライトのひとつ。忘れてならないのは、ドラマーのクリフォード・ジャービス。ブレイキーに心酔していたこの若者と、ルディ・バン・ゲルダーの完璧なエンジニアリングは今作に欠かせない存在。このアルバムを聴けば元気にもなるし、うっとりとした気分にもなる。綺麗なパッケージでの再発は実にうれしい限りだ。(Richard Palmer, Amazon.co.uk)

Recorded in 1960, Freddie Hubbard's Open Sesame is not only a very good CD: it dramatises history in the making. The trumpeter was not unknown then, but he was still in his early years; so was pianist McCoy Tyner, for whom a momentous association with John Coltrane was just around the corner. Indeed, the best-known musician at the time of recording was bassist Sam Jones, and while he went on to bigger things with Cannonball Adderley and then Oscar Peterson, it was Hubbard and Tyner who would emerge as unambiguously major figures. That by rights should also have characterised tenorist Tina Brooks, but this superb player (his work on "But Beautiful" here is exquisite) never got the recognition he deserved, dying almost forgotten in 1974 at the age of 42. Further highlights include the leader's "Hub's Nub" and the two takes apiece of the title track and "Gypsy Blue", both excellent compositions by Brooks. Mention should also be made of drummer Clifford Jarvis, a young lion steeped in Blakey, and of Rudy Van Gelder's predictably flawless engineering. The music both invigorates and enchants, and its reappearance, handsomely packaged, is most welcome. --Richard Palmer

若き活力に満ち溢れた、フレディ・ハバードのデビュー作。
ジャケットのハバードの堂々とした立ち振る舞い、そして少し幼さも残る笑顔に
「これは！」と何か閃きの様なものを感じて聴きましたが、素晴らしい作品でした。
全６曲（別テイクを入れると８曲）非常にバリエーションに富んだ内容で
通して楽しめます。
終始一本調子のハードバップのアルバムをよく見かけますが、これを見習ってほしい所。
中でもティナ・ブルックスによる１曲目と３曲目は秀逸。
印象的なイントロ、途中で転調を挟む展開と非常に鮮やかな出来映えです。
また彼の吹くテナーサックスの音色も落ち着いた、ムードあるもの。
この作品は彼の貢献が非常に大きいと言えるでしょう。
若さに乗った力強い作品。かなりいかついリズムで進む曲もあるのですが、
全く聴いていて疲れません。激しい曲の中にも豊かな情感、安らぐ空気が
流れています。そこらへんが天才たる所以ではないかと思います。

最も現代的でいて、最もスタンダード、そして確かな技術と歌心を持ったFreddie Hubbardのデビュー作である。タイトルになっている一曲目のOpen Sesameは彼が天才と呼ばれた理由のよくわかる。曲の頭から終わりまで全てかっこいいのだ。しかも無理がない。まさにJazzのかっこよさを凝縮したような曲である。その上このＣＤのすごいところは、六曲すべてがかっこいいのだ。幼稚な表現のようだが、聴けばわかるかっこよさがこのＣＤにはあるのだ。選曲も非常に気に入っている。

ご存知Ｆ・ハバードのＢＮ初リーダー作。ジャケットはハバードの自信に満ち溢れた笑顔が印象的で内容も充実。デビュー作ということで何も失うものはないといった演奏が魅力的な１枚。サイドメンもＴＳのＴ．ブルックスも好演。幻の．．．といった形容詞がよく使われるこの奏者、非常に歌心のあるソロを聴かせてくれます。この６日後の録音のＢＮ４０４１のＴＲＵＥ　ＢＬＵＥ／Ｔ．ＢＲＯＯＫＳと合わせてどうぞ。
