キートンのトーキー主演第一作です。彼が銀幕で発した最初の言葉は"Friends!"。人の「声」を聞くということがこれほど胸躍る体験になりうるとは！1930年当時彼の声を聞いて熱狂した観客と同じく私もドキドキしました。
思ったよりも低音の彼の声は耳なじみがよく、セリフ回しが自然で魅力的。さらに映画のラストで披露される歌とダンスは、予想をはるかに超えてすばらしい。ヴォードヴィル出身らしく一本芯のピシッと通った姿勢で軽快にステップを踏むキートンは、サイレントとはまた違う輝きを放ち優雅でセクシーです。物語は陳腐でミュージカルシーンもお粗末、他に何ら見るべきところのない作品ですが、キートンの声を聞きダンスを見るためだけにでも鑑賞の価値は十分あります。
キートンらしいスタントがほとんど見られないのは残念。それでも随所でその片鱗をフィルムに刻み込もうと彼が最大限の努力をしているのが見てとれます。恋敵のロバート・モンゴメリーに怒ってとびかかっていく時のジャンプの高いこと！そして完璧なランディングはまるでしなやかな猫のよう。
一般に、多くのサイレントスター同様キートンもトーキーの波に乗り切れず失脚したと思われています。でもこの作品を観る限り、キートンにとってトーキーは何ら問題ではなかった。真の問題は、MGMがキートンの高度な芸術性をまったく理解せず、彼を普通のスター＝商品としてコントロールしようとしたことです。
「哀しき道化」という、サイレント作品で一度も演じなかった役を演じねばならなかったことは、キートンへの、そして喜劇への侮辱でした。彼の人生を重ねながら見るラストシーンの"無表情"は、わたしたちの胸をしめつけます。
