   キース・ジャレットは、ソロピアノで独自の世界を築きあげたことでも評価されている。ドイツのレーベル「ECM」からの最初の作品はソロピアノで、スタジオ録音では8曲のオリジナルを演奏した。
   だが、キースの天才ぶりが発揮されたのは、完全なる「即興」ピアノ演奏の本盤だ。観客の目の前で、気持ちのおもむくまま弾くソロは長くなるが、それでも起承転結のある構成力の高さには舌を巻く。即興でありながら、難解なところがない。冒頭の<1>は、車のCMに使用されたこともあるほどだ。彼のポップなメロディセンスが最大限に表れ、リアルタイムで最適なハーモニーをつけていく。一定のテンポで1つのフレーズを繰り返す情熱的なパートや、すべての音に集中して奏でるパートの美しさに、言葉を失うばかりだ。
   このアルバムの成功もあって、即興ソロピアノ・アルバムは多数録音される。だが、完成度では本盤が最も高いといえるだろう。（高木宏真）

曲全体の構成力とテクニックも賞賛に値するけれども，この即興を生み出す突出した集中力がとにかくすごい．ほとばしる集中力の塊のよう．聞く側にエネルギーを充電させてくれる貴重で素晴らしいCD．この先長らく手放せない逸品．

１９７５年の演奏です。今から３０年以上前。当時は、同じジャズでもマッコイ・タイナーとかの方が好きで、キース・ジャレットなんて「軟弱なもの」聴かないよと格好をつけていましたが、ごめんなさい。間違っていました。５０歳になって、アイポッドを買って、再びぼつぼつ音楽を聴くようになりましたが、このケルン・コンサート、心に染みわたります。LPを持っていたのですが、この度、晴れてCDを買って聞き直しました。名演奏、傑作。打ちのめされる。心を動かされる。フジコ・ヘミングウェイ聴いてピアノが好きになった方も、ぜひ、聴いてくださいね。本当に、一生、聴ける宝物になると思います。

発売当時からこの演奏のすごさは皆さんが語っております。
なんと神々しい演奏でしょうか。
人間が持つ想像力の素晴らしさをまざまざと感じさせる。
この曲の非凡さをうまく言葉では表せないのが歯がゆい。
