ギルバート・オサリバンの人気の根強さは、彼の「澄み切った声」と「澄み切ったメロディー」による部分が大きい。特にアイルランド出身である彼が作る旋律は“アメリカンポップスの陽気さ”“ブリティッシュポップスの濃さ”とは確実に違う、独特の浮遊感が漂う繊細さがどの曲にも生きており、“Light & Smooth”という言葉が良く似合う。「クレア」を初めて聴いた時「音階というものは世界共通なのに、なぜこの人はこのようなメロディーを生み出せるのだ？」と不思議でならなかった。また彼の声質も非常に繊細さを感じさせ、マイケル・フランクスのような脆さ・危うさとは違う、清流のような清らかさを感じる。これらをみても彼を「世界を代表するポップ・アーティスト」と言っても言いすぎではない。ただ、同じ代表格であるポール・マッカートニーやエルトン・ジョンらとの決定的な違いは“サウンドの幅”だ。ミュージシャンとしての曲種の幅は、残念ながら彼らに比べると「狭い」と言わざるを得ない。しかし世界的ヒットとなった「アローン・アゲイン」「クレア」のメロディーの美しさや完成度は、もうそれを超える曲を作ろうとする必要すらないほどの仕上がりであり、聴くたびに彼の偉大さ痛感する。昨今の多様化した音楽は「旋律の美しさ」を置き忘れてしまった「雑音」のような印象を受けるが、例えば雑踏の中でそのような雑音飛び交う中をかいくぐって家に帰った時、または１日の仕事が終って帰宅した時にもしオサリバンの音楽を聴いたなら、間違いなく心は癒され解放されるだろう。彼の旋律の美しさはそれくらい心に染み入ってくる見事さだ。

　おやすみ前の音楽みたいイメージがあるオサリバンだけど、僕がはじめて彼を知ったのは5 Get Down がヒットしていてマセガキ３人でラジカセくっつけてダビングしあいました。だからヤンチャ盛りっぽいこのビート、今でも大大大好きです。僕がみんなにいいいいと言うので友達の何人かはレコードを買ってしまいました。

　子供の頃は2 Alone Again の良さがイマイチわかりませんでしたけど、今聴くといいですね。カラオケでも歌ったりします。でも、この中でいちばん好きなのは8 What's In A Kiss かな。

　しかし、もっといい曲があるんだ。７４年に12や16よりランクもずっと良かった曲「Why Oh Why」、なんてきれいな曲だろうと思ってしまう。７０年代の曲ではこれが自分のベスト３にはいる。この曲を22番目に入れてしめればいいのにな。

　個人的にはCDチェンジャーに入っているCD-RWには22番目にラジカセから引っぱったモノラルの「Why Oh Why」が入っていますが、曲がきれいなのでステレオみたいに聞こえますよ。

ギルバート・オサリバンを始めて聞いたのは深夜番組のラジオでした。当時は歌っている人の名前も分からないまま、曲の持つなんともいえない悲壮感というかある種、彼のもつ哲学みたいな独特の雰囲気と、歌詞に胸がジーンとなったのを覚えています。あれからかなりたって偶然見つけたのが、このアルバムです。まず歌詞に感動しました。イングランドとアイルランドの歴史を知っているとなるほど彼の歌っていた本当の意味がわかると思います。曲によって赴きは違いますが、詩の世界に関して言うと、彼個人を超えて国（アイルランド）に対する誇りと平和を切望する歌に、私は星４つつけました。
