サスペンスとして売られているようだけれど、この映画はサスペンス映画ではない。鋭い味覚を持つ青年ニコラは、化粧品会社の経営者フレデリックに気に入られて彼の”味見役”となる。フレデリックはニコラに完全な”同調”を求める。すべてにおいて自分と同じ感じ方を求めるフレデリック。ニコラもときに反発しながらもフレデリックの魅力に惹かれ、彼の要求に応えようとする。求めるフレデリックにも、応えるニコラにも徐々に狂気がにじみ始める。こう書くとサスペンスぽいのは確かだが、この映画は純愛物語なのだ。ただし、その愛は極めていびつである。男同士の愛だからいびつなのではない。フレデリックの毛ほどの妥協もなく”完全なる同調”を求める愛の姿がいびつなのである。鋭い剃刀の刃を渡るような、ほんのわずかな”ぶれ”も許されないフレデリックの愛の対象となったニコラ。一番悲劇的なのは、ニコラがフレデリックの際限のない要求に応えることのできる鋭敏な感性を持っていたことだ。ニコラもまたフレデリックを愛し始める。しかし、二人が別の人間である限り、やはりこの愛は成就しえないのだ。彼らが本気で愛し合うほど、わずかな”ぶれ”は必ず起きる。そして、やはりフレデリックにはそれが我慢できない。ラストシーンのフレデリックの微笑みが印象的な、いかにもフランスらしいねじれたドラマが秀逸。

芸術の都パリというが、フランスの見事な芸術作品をベルナール・ラップ監督は魅せてくれた。

完璧な舌を持つフレデリックはやはり完璧な舌を持つ人間にしか興味を持てなかった。
その人間が現れた瞬間、フレデリックの奇妙な趣味心が頭をもたげ始めた・・・。
フレデリックの心とニコラの心をあれこれ考えると、いろいろな結論が見出され、面白い。

ロアルド・ダールの短編「味」「おとなしい兇器」、食べ物に関する短編ミステリーであるが、この「趣味の問題」もこの傑作短編を思い出させる作品である。
