重厚だ。それでいながら度が過ぎていない。やっぱり｢第９｣はこうでなくては。
オールド・スタイルではあるが、様々なスタイルの演奏が氾濫する中、却ってこの演奏を無視する事は出来ない。Ｓ＝イッセルシュテットの指揮は、現代楽器に於けるベートーヴェンの交響曲演奏のスタンダード・スタイルの此れ以上無き見本と私は確信する。古き良き時代のウィーン・フィルの響きと共に、今失われ始めたクラシック音楽華やかなりし日々を、今一度取り戻そうではないか。
この交響曲の王の下、ポップ・カルチャーに目に物言わせて呉れようぞ！

音色はふくよかだし均整が取れていて堂々たるベートーヴェン。伝統あるウィーン・フィルの伝統的なサウンドを力むことなく引き出した演奏だと思う。どの楽章も十分きれいだし、十分熱中して聴けるだけの内容の濃さがある。しかし、正直なところ面白みに欠けるかも、と思ってしまう。贅沢な話かもしれないが。ともあれ、これからはじめて第九を聴くという人には最もお勧めしやすい演奏である。というか、シュミット＝イッセルシュテットのベートーヴェン交響曲全集はどれもお勧めである。

以前レンタルした第９は、テンポが軽快で少し軽い感じでした。今回は自分でも購入して実際に聞いてみると、重々しくてとてもよかったです。どちらも私は好きですが、アン・ライスさんの小説を読んでいて第９の第二楽章についての描写が細かくされていたので、それがきっかけで初めて真面目に聞いてみました。小説に雰囲気が合うのは、こちらのCDでした。なお、トレーニングジムでこの曲を聴きながら走っていますが、今は第四楽章がお気に入りです。最後の部分で一緒に「たったったったっ」と走って終わります。
それにしても、CDによって表現方法がこんなに違うなんて驚きました。これからCDを買う時に、他のCDと比較してこれはこういう演奏だというレビューがあったら検討しやすいなと思いました。
