崩壊寸前だった上方落語を見事なまでに復活させ、76才になった今も、およそ100日の舞台をつとめる人間国宝・桂米朝。
本名:中川 清(なかがわ きよし)

最終学歴:大東文化学院中退(兵役に就き復学せず)
芸歴昭和22年、四代目 桂米団治に入門。
昭和38年、芸術祭文部大臣奨励賞受賞、以後、昭和48年大阪府民劇場賞、昭和44、45年芸術祭優秀賞、昭和55年芸術選奨文部大臣賞など受賞多数。
昭和62年、紫綬褒章受賞。
平成8年、重要無形文化財保持者(人間国宝)認定。
平成14年11月、文化功労者認定
