ショパンのスケルツォは、精神状態が不安定な時期に書かれた。それゆえか、狂気に満ちたような曲想で、曲自体が高い緊張感を持っている。
ポリーニは、そのオリジナルの曲想を最大限に緊迫感をもって表現し、スケルツォ３など、戦慄すら覚えるほど衝撃的に音が伝わってくる。

２番はややあっさりしていて、マルタ＝アルゲリッチと比べると迫力に欠けるが、ショパンのスケルツォ全曲としては、リヒテルをも越える最上のものだろう。ダイヤモンドのようにキラキラと輝く音の粒が聴く者を圧倒する。

スケルツォは、曲調に起伏があり、派手に激しく弾く部分がある。悪く言えば雑に弾いても情熱的に感じてしまう曲だと思う。

ポリーニは比較的落ち着いた気持ちで弾いていて、繊細で美しいスケルツォを奏でている。それをつまらないと思う人もいるし、素晴らしいと感じる人もいるだろう。結局、音楽の評価は人それぞれなので、賛否両論になると思う。私は、このスケルツォは美しくて好きだ。

やや乱暴な分類をすると、ショパンの4曲のスケルツォは、1、3番の「奇数組」と、2、4番の「偶数組」に分けられるのではないかと思います。
ポリーニの緊迫感を持った演奏は、前者の奇数組にはプラスに作用しますが、後者の偶数組には少しやかましい印象を与えてしまい、かえってマイナスになるのではないかと思います。この録音に対する評価が分かれているのは、そういった理由からではないでしょうか。
私は1番が最も好きですので、ポリーニの演奏は個人的には高く評価しています。
