これまでのトム・ペティ（＆ハートブレイカーズ）には、マイナー基調であってもどこか明るさが残っていたように思います。辛く寂しい気持ちを奏でていても、どこか飄々と受け流している印象がありました。運命を運命と切り離した感じかもしれません。

しかし、このアルバムからそれは感じません。このアルバムからは深い内省を感じるのです。ちょうどレコード会社の移籍問題で揺れていた時期だったからだとか、ソロ名義の作品から再び「トム・ペティ＆ハートブレイカーズ」の作品に戻ったからとか、様々な専門家諸氏のコメントはありますが、一般のリスナーである私にはわかりません。ただ今までの印象から一変、音の密度や絡み合いが深く、重く、聴き手である私を、私自身の深い精神世界へ誘うような、そんな気分にさせてくれます。

ノリで騒ぐのもロックなら、孤独に思いを馳せるのもまたロック。そんな側面を存分に味わいたければ、一聴の価値は十二分にあると思います。

彼らの最高傑作といって良いでしょう。サウンド、楽曲ともに非の打ち所のない、現代のアメリカン・ロックの最高峰に位置するアルバムなのではないか、と勝手に思っています。全体的に物悲しく、痛々しいイメージの楽曲が目立つような気もしますが、その哀愁味に溢れた楽曲群には”名曲”と呼べるものも多く、非常に味わい深いものがあります。以前、ジェフ・リンのプロデュースにより、より大きな（セールス面での）成功を得てきた彼らですが、作品の質としては、リック・ルービン（彼らとの相性は抜群！）のプロデュースによるこの作品の方が遥かに上。現在最も、アメリカン・ロックを体現しているバンドといって良いと思います。
