大西順子と言えば「ワウ」と「クルージン」の両アルバムが最高の出来だが、このニューヨークのヴィレッジ・ヴァンガードのライブ盤も上出来だ。打楽器的奏法で有名なのはハウス・オブ・ブルー・ライツというアルバムでのエディー・コスタ。よく比較されるが、コスタと大西順子は大きく違う。コスタはただ鍵盤を叩くだけ。大西順子はパワフルに強いタッチで男性のように演奏するが、メロディアスでスイングしている。アーヴィング・バーリンの名曲でスタン・ゲッツなどが好んで演奏する「ブルー・スカイ」やＭＪＱの「コンコルド」も大西にかかると、原メロディーを隠し、独特の「大西ワールド」にしてしまう。そこがいい。という人と、原曲の美しさをなぞって欲しいという人に分かれるところだろう。しかし、原曲の美しさをなぞる人は多いので、大西の個性を楽しむべきだ。生真面目にガーンと弾く大西順子を聴くと元気がでる。（松本敏之）

ヴィレッジバンガードでやった時の記録ですね。全体的に聴くといかに彼女が本当にスウィングしていたか、そして彼女の強いオリジナリティがどれほどあったかが良く分かる。また、クラッシック的なフレーズが時折出てくるところが説得力を倍加している。中でも"So long Eric"のヴァイタルな演奏が特に素晴らしい。スリリングだし訴えかけてくる何かがある。ただし、これは彼女のどの演奏にも言えることだが、ピアノの音色が若干ぐしゃっとしていて僕にはそれが良いこととは思えなかった。でも、それを超えて迫ってくる衝撃的な何かがあることは確か。

10年程前に買ったCDです。「日本人離れした」という表現が適切かどうか分かりませんが、とにかく「ゴリゴリ弾く」という感じの力強いピアノプレーはとてもインパクトがありますし、ライブでの他のメンバーとの息もピタリと合っていることを感じさせる締りのある演奏です。最近新しいアルバムはでていないようですが、新作が早く出て欲しいです。
