小柳ゆきの名前しか知らなくて初めて聞きました。想像以上の歌唱力と表現力に驚きました。ソウルフルな心地よさも味わえます。若き歌姫と呼ばれる所以がとてもよく分かる一枚。いろいろな曲が入っていますが、バラードがとくにいいです。どうしてこんなに心に染みてくるのか不思議なくらい。彼女自身の作詞によるヒット曲「愛情」は等身大の詞がいいですね。

宇多田ヒカルとともに､若くして音楽界のTOPに立った若き歌姫”小柳ゆき”の２ndアルバム。洋楽を思わせるようなこのアルバムは､いわゆる｢カッコいいアルバム｣だ。

00年のヒット5「愛情」（72万枚）、11「be alive」（50万枚）が収録されています。作曲は全て外注ですが歌詞は4、5、7、11に樋口侑氏との連名で小柳氏の名前があります。10は彼女だけの作詞ですね。一方プロデューサーの名がなく、音楽的な統括は何人もクレジットされた各アレンジャー達により作りこまれているようです。そのため全体的にはR&Bで統一されているものの、作品全体として創造的な意思はあまり感じられません。

アルバム曲で注目は3「heaven feelin’」4「unreilable」12「precious time」。非常にメロウなソウルナンバーです。小柳氏はどうしてもシングル曲のエモーショナルな印象がありますが、このしなやかなタッチで、BVのファルセットと調和してゆける空気の変幻さこそ聴き所だと思います。特に4や12の深い低音の発声はMISIAより迫力ありますし、まるで多重録音のようでしかしやはり一人の声だと驚かされる響き、倍音のアグレッシヴさは突出してファンキーです。一方7「fortune」はバラード。これだけ山田直毅の作曲・編曲で、日本人好みする旋律です。

他には例えばスピード感のある曲も多くあり、1や13など彼女のリズム感ある高出力の声と加速感が相乗しあうと音楽に太い波動が生れます。特に「愛情」は気持ちいですね。気運が高まり一気に放水されるダムのように勢いよく飛び出します。特に“true heart”と頂点を極める箇所は快感です。
でもやはり今作はソウルナンバーにおけるその歌声による空気を操る力が聴き所だと思います。特に「be alive」は素晴らしいですね。大きく喉を開放させたその発声から繰り出される圧倒的声量、それが頭蓋へ響き渡り驚異的に増幅する共鳴、それらがクレッシェンドして広がり行くシーンは当時も今も驚異的ですよ。彼女だけに成立しえる00年代の名曲だなと思います。
