彼の最高傑作というとコレとInnervisionsで意見が分かれるところでしょうが、
私はこのアルバムが最高傑作だと信じて疑いません。
本人が人間として、またアーティストとして間違いなく絶頂期にあり、
その充実感や幸福感がそのまま楽曲に表れています。
きっと湯水の如く曲が溢れ出し、厳選しながらも必然的に大作に仕上がったと
感じます。尺の長い曲も多いですが、飽きることはありません。

ちなみにLP時代は2枚組＋EP1枚という変則でしたが、CDになって2枚に
収まりました。Saturn以降の4曲がこのEPにあたります。
一時は2曲ずつ各CDに加えるという暴挙がありましたが、この4曲は決して
ボーナストラックではありません。計算しつくされた見事な曲間や流れを
是非味わってみてください。

言い忘れましたが、今回はSHM-CDでの発売です。この音質は驚きです。
各パートの音像がはっきりして距離感がきれいに感じます。今までモヤッと
した後ろで鳴っているハイハットの音やリムショットの音がここまで
鮮明になるのかと感心します。録音技術は日進月歩ですが、まるで現在の
最新録音機器でレコーディングされたようです。
騙されたと思って買ってみて下さい。損はしませんよ。

今、話題のSHM-CD、その中でも、音楽通の仲間が飲み会の席で口を揃えて言っていたのが「『キー・オブ・ライフ』のSHM-CDはいい！」ということでした。「マジ!?　明日買いに行く！」と言ったものの、初回盤はとうに売り切れ。やっべーと思っていたらありがたきアンコール・プレス！　早速、手に入れました。

うお。冒頭のスティーヴィーの多重録音コーラス、この生々しさがもう違う！まるでそこにいるかのようです。とにかく音のシャープネス、定位がビシッと決まるカンジ。マスター自体は2000年に再発された時と同じもののようですが、やっぱりポリカーボネイトの素材を変えるだけでここまで変わってしまうんですね……まだまだオーディオは深い（そんなマニアじゃないけど）。でもって、CDもまだまだ捨てたもんじゃない！　嬉しいです！

70年代中盤は正にStevie Wonder全盛の時代。Stevieがアルバムを出すとグラミー賞総ナメで他のミュージシャンに分はなかった。そのStevieの最高峰とも言えるアルバムがSongs in the Key of Life。これを聴けば納得が行く。何しろ曲がいい，とにかくいい。何でこんなにいい曲書けるんだろうと驚愕する程。当時のLPで2枚以上の大型アルバムは評論家には手厳しく批評されたりすることがよくあったが，これには評論家も何と批評するか苦しんだことだろう。私のお気に入りはLove's in need of love today, Have a talk with God，Village ghetto land，I wish，Knocks me off my feet，Pastime paradise，そして続くIsn't she lovely，Joy inside my tears，Black man，Ngiculela - Es una historia -I am singing，If it's magic，As，Another star，もう収録曲の殆どになってしまうが，この時代のStevieが如何に素晴らしかったか否応でも思い知らされる。90年代以降の洋楽しか聴いたことがない方，Stevieを多くいるソウルミュージシャンの一人と勘違いしている方，そして洋楽を全く聴かない方，是非聴いてみて下さい。こんな音楽あったのかと思えるほど素晴らしい作品です。
