ヨ・ラ・テンゴの11枚目のアルバムはちかちかするオルガン、弱音器をつけたソフトなブラシ・ドラミング、大またにゆっくり歩き回るベース、何気なく爪弾くギター、絡み合う抑え気味のヴォーカルなどが特徴の、あくまでも満足のゆく、狡猾なほどに控えめな作品だ。そう、これこそはヨ・ラ・テンゴ。かつてドリーム・シンジケートと突風のようなフィードバックを競ったこともあるバンドだ。その傾向はアップテンポのCherry Chapstickにも現れている。『Nothing』は、このトリオ――アイラ・カプラン、ジョージア・ハブリー、ジェイムス・マクニュー――が90年代にスリーピング・ピルの名でクラブシーンに出没していた時以来最も実験的な曲で、雰囲気や低音楽器、ミニマリストの歌の構造などに対する関心を探っている。そんなわけで、一貫して抑え気味のトーンは前例がないわけではないし、1984年の結成以来このバンドが確実に進化し、そのサウンドに変化を加え続けていることを、彼らのファンなら誰でも知っている。しかし『Nothing』について特筆すべきは(知識欲旺盛にジャンルをミックスすることや黒毛和牛並みの優れたメロディは別にして)、その首尾一貫性だ。これは1990年の『Fakebook』以来このグループにとって最も一貫したテーマでまとめたCDだ。もっと強い絆は、初めて出会った時のお互いの気を引こうとする素振りから、喧嘩しながらも何とか別れずに済ますという難業に至るまで、アイラとジョージアの夫婦が何について歌っているかを解き明かすのは決してやさしいことではなかったことだ。微妙かつ驚くべきことに――歌こそ命――どんなジャンルの罠を仕掛けようとも、このレコードは、うまく身をかわすのだ。大人のためのインディー・ロックと呼べばいい。ヴォリュームを全開にして夢中になるがいい。 --Mike McGonigal

これはいいですよ。オルタナ、ローファイなどのネガティブなイメージ（たとえば音楽的とは思えない、かと言って斬新でもない凡庸で稚拙なギターや録音）とは無縁の美しい作品です。

シュギー・オーティスを聴いて得られる発見みたいなものが、殊に宅録をやっている方には散見できるのでは、と思います。「てきとうっぽくてなんかいい」と思っている人はこのバンドを誤解しているように思います。優れたスタジオワーク！

落ちます。海のそこくらいまで。ゆらゆらひんやりとして気持ち良いのですが、そのまま息耐えてしまいたくなる。
私生活で本当に落ち込んでいるときに聞くとヤバイことになる…かも？

個人的に、落ちたいときに是非聴いて行きたい。

鼓動のような音とともに幕開けするこのアルバムは、ずっとずっと深い眠りの奥にある。
そこは光と影が交錯し、どちらがどちらでもなく、それぞれの意味を曖昧にする。

深い眠りと、目覚めの寸前、、、そこを行ったり来たりしてまどろむ心地よさは何にも変え難い。
時折射す光線の眩しささえ心地よく、タールのように重い闇の中で安らぎをえる。

オヤスミ前にどうぞ。
