　｢Marvinは、繊細な知性と、孤独と。それから性愛の輝きを、黒人音楽の最高峰の一つに昇華しました。このアルバムは、その彼が残した美の設計図を基に、現在のMotownに関わっている大勢のアーティストが、豪華に、官能的に、録音したものです｣小沢健二

　このプロジェクトに参加した彼のメッセージがこのアルバムの内容を何よりも雄弁に物語っている。現代のR＆Bシーン、とりわけかつてのR&Bマナーを忠実に継承しているアーティスト達が、いかにマーヴィンに影響を受け、敬愛しているかを実感できるトリビュートに仕上がっていると思う。取り上げているナンバーは(当然ながら)かつてニューソウル界の鬼才と呼ばれていた70年代初頭~80年代初頭の頃のものが多く、原曲の持ち味を殺さずにかつてのR&Bマナーで料理されたものが多いので、最近のR&Bはどうも･･･という方にもオススメできる。新旧のアレンジをうまく組み合わせた7や久々登場のエル･デバージの9、地味ながら名曲として知られる12を抜群のセンスでカヴァーしたKenny Latimoreあたりが素晴らしい。

　そして、何といっても気になるのが、活動休止中に突如として名を連ねた小沢健二の14だろう。バックトラックはジャネイの6そのままであり、それに合わせて歌っているだけ。要するにカラオケなのだが、コレが凄い。その歌いまわしは数年後にリリースされたあの｢Eclectic｣そのもので、あのアルバム以上に露骨に性的な歌詞を独特のウィスパー･ヴォイスで歌う様にはかなり驚かされた。｢Eclectic｣が好きなファンは間違いなく必聴ものの楽曲。勿論、アルバムの内容自体もとても高品質なので安心してオススメできます。

まず全曲に参加者のマーヴィンへの尊敬と愛を感じることができます。そしてそれぞれのアーティストの曲への解釈も楽しむことができます。しかし、決してバラバラな印象を受けることなく聴き通せるのはやはり曲の素晴らしさ、マーヴィンの持つイメージの強さでしょう。　これを聴くとオリジナルも聴きたくなって2倍楽しめます。
