   90年代が終わって数年もすれば、あの10年はピアニスト兼ボーカリスト、ダイアナ・クラールが登場した時代として記憶されるはずだ。やたらに楽しげで華々しいが、歌心に欠けるシンガーは山ほどいる。だが、そんな中から抜け出てきた魅力あるアーティストのひとりがカナダのブリテイッシュ・コロンビア州出身のクラールだ。ナット・キング・コール・トリオ印のスタイルを引っさげ、師匠である西海岸の名ピアニスト故ジミー・ロウルズに祝福され、クラールは歌詞に愛情を込めグルーヴに気を配り、歌をその歌がもともと意図されていた通りにさりげなく歌う。本作で彼女を囲んでいるのはおなじみの仲間たち。同郷のギターのラッセル・マローン、ベースのジョン・クレイトン、ドラムのルイス・ナッシュとジェフ・ハミルトン、ヴァイブラフォンの（以前ビル・エヴァンスと組んでいた）ラリー・バンカー。そして、そんな彼らをジョニー・マンデルの洗練されたストリングスのアレンジが支える。クラールと仲間たちは、アーヴィング・バーリンの古くさい「Let's Face the Music and Dance」とシナトラの代表曲「I've Got You Under My Skin」をボサ・ノヴァに乗せ、はるか南のブラジルに運んでいる。マローンの生き生きとしたギターはクラールの心のこもった「When I Look in Your Eyes」を引き立て、ハミルトンのドラムはマイケル・フランクスのナンバー「Popsicle Toes」を踊らせる。さらに「Devil May Care」「East of the Sun (and West of the Moon)」「The Best Thing for You」、ストライドピアノ風の「I Can't Give You Anything but Love」では余分な音を抑えてグルーブさせている。また「I'll String Along with You」「Pick Yourself Up」「Do It Again」でのマンデルのまとを得たストリングスは主役の座を奪うほどだ。このように、本作のナンバーすべてが、カナダから贈られたこの素晴らしい才媛のクールな炎を照らし輝かせている。（Eugene Holley Jr., Amazon.co.uk）

『Why Should I Care』　このアルバムの最後に唄われる曲なのですが、とてもいいです。ある意味、哀しいくらいに理知的なひとりの女性がいます。彼女は十分に分かっている。時は流れていくものだし、世の中には絶対と言えるものはないし、何かが変わっていくのに大した理由などなかったり･･･することも･･･　けれど、Que sera sera なるようにしかならないと唄えてしまえるタイプじゃない。何故なら、分かっているの。分かっているのだけど、いまだにあなたの心配をしたり、あなたのこれからのことを想ったりしている。･･･　Why Should I Care　私がそんなことを心配してどうするの？　･･･　私はちゃんとそんなことは分かっているの。･･･

そんなニュアンスで唄う彼女に付かず離れずに寄り添う音たちがまた絶妙です。彼女の背中を押してみたり、彼女の髪を撫ぜてみたり、頬をつついて見たり･･･　しかも、そんなちょっかいの出し方が、キュートで、ロマンティックで、エレガント。間奏から現れ、彼女の手をとり、身体をささえ、やがて、彼女の背中をそっと押しだすようなニュアンスのピート・クリストリーブのサックスの音色のなんて紳士的なこと。終盤では彼女に対して紳士的過ぎたことを悔やんでいる紳士の哀愁までをも表現してみせてくれているようです。　一人でも多くのひとに聴いてもらいたいと思います。

1999年5月発表。ニューヨーク・アバター・スタジオで録音。
ダイアナ・クラール最初のグラミー受賞作。トミー・リピューマのプロデュース。ただし、ボーナス・トラックとなっている最後の『Why Should I Care』だけはあのデビッド・フォスターがプロデュースしている。
彼女は古いジャズの曲を見事に歌う。このアルバムではピアノも冴えている。古いジャズの持っている『癒し』が彼女のハスキーな声に乗って、めちゃくちゃ素敵な空間を作りだす。その上美人なのだから始末に負えない（●＾o＾●）。このアルバムの頃の彼女は今より若干ぽっちゃりしているが、十二分に輝いている。

今年のオスカーを総なめにしたクイント・イーストウッドが次回作で彼女の音楽を使うようだが、それも当然と思わせる輝きが既にある。

落ち着いた気品のあるハスキーボイスと歌唱力は彼女の人柄さえつたえてきそうです。全14曲中、8曲を担当している、ジョニーマンデルの洗練されたアレンジとプロデュースはこのアルバムを他のボーカルアルバムと一線を画するものに仕上げています。ジョニーマンデルが天才作曲家、天才アレンジャーと言われる所以をここでもさらりと披露しています。録音の状態も精緻に計算されつくしており非常に良好です。刺激的なものを一切排除した、しっとりとしたいつまでも飽きないチャーミングなアルバムです。
