ヒット曲、四曲目「恋にタッチはご用心」が有名なようですが、私は三曲目「like always」七曲目「time for livin'」に卓越したポップセンスを感じます。全体的に、ビーチボーイズにも負けないコーラス、ブライアンウィルソンにも負けないメロディメイク。ビーチボーイズのペットサウンズやスマイリースマイルが好きな人は必ず好きになると思います。

日本で言われている「ソフトロック」というくくりでいうと、このアソシエイションの4thアルバムは間違いなく、その五本の指に入ってくるでしょう。
カートベッチャーの卒業生と聞いて、少し敬遠する人がいるかもしれませんが、このアルバムは大丈夫。しっかりポップに仕上がってます。
60年代のポップスのきらびやかさ、サイケ風味、緻密なコーラスワーク。これらがほどよく交わって、まるで万華鏡の中にいるかのような錯覚に陥ります。

また、トータルアルバムとしての完成度の高さも見逃してはいけません。

「Come on in」の滝のように流れるコーラスで聞く者を圧倒したかと思えば、「Like Always」ではさりげないジャズコーラスで手招きしてみる。そして「Everything that touches you」で桃源郷にトリップさせて、「Time for livin'」で時間も忘れるほどの楽しいおもてなし。それから「The bus song」で一度はぐらかせて、最後に「Birthday morning」でキッチリお祝い。

このアルバムにはフィフスディメンションで有名なボーンズハウが全面プロデュースしています。当然彼の持ち味であるベースラインがこのアルバム全体をリードしているので、前衛的なことをしながら非常に安定したサウンドを作り上げることに成功しています。

一人で夜中にヘッドフォンをしても、一度聴いただけでは決してすべてを把握することができない緻密なコーラスアレンジ。すぐ気を抜くと目の前が真っ白になることもしばしば。
そう、忘れては行けません。これが1968年に発表された音楽だということを。
