1975年12月録音。ECM1072。副題として『Music Of Carla Bley』とあるようにカーラ・ブレイの作品を取り上げている。

特筆すべきは、ゲイリー・バートン自身が見いだしたパット・メセニーが本作で参加していることだろう。パットはエレクトリック12弦ギターを弾いている。ギターはもう一人いてミック・グッドリックが参加している。いつもにも増して静かな世界が展開する。つまりいつものポップな乗りのようなものは影を潜め、ひたすら4本マレットの紡ぎ出すヴィブラホンが拡散していく。

パット・メセニーのファンにも聴き逃せない作品だ。

今は亡きトリオ・レコードが「プレイズ・カーラ・ブレイ」の邦題で国内版LPをリリースした当時、速攻で入手して毎日こればかり聴いていた記憶がある。

自分で自分をBurtonに売り込んだという、若き日のMethenyのプレイが聴ける。エレクトリック12弦を用いているので、音色はのちのES175とは異なるものの、フレージングの多彩さはまぎれもなくMethenyのものだ。２・５・６の鮮烈なソロを初めて聴いた時の感動は、今でもはっきり覚えている。
バークリーにおける師匠筋のMick Goodrickも２曲でなかなか悪くないソロを聴かせてくれるが、Methenyの鮮烈なソロには到底かなうものではない。モノが違うとしか言いようがない。実際、これの次の作品"PASSENGERS"では、ギタリストはMetheny１人だけになり、Goodrickは姿を消してしまうのだ。そしてその"PASSENGERS"は、なんと収録曲全６曲中、半分の３曲がMethenyの作品なのである。いかにMethenyの才能が光っていたかがわかろうというものだ。

主役のBurtonのプレイは、彼の他の作品にも言えることだが、１曲たりとも「駄演」がない。常に一定以上のレベルを維持している。これも凄いことである。本作では特に２の"Ictus"のパートにおける急速調のソロが最大の聴きものだと思う。
