アムランならではの選曲、演奏。こうした知られざる名曲を弾く名手は、昔はスティーブン・ハフがいたが最近は彼も（別に年をとったからではないと思う。現に破ハフはまだ若いのだから）往年の輝きを失ってしまった気がする。そんな中で、アムランは非常に高いレベルを保ちつつ、知られざる名曲を引き続けていると思う。このアルバムでいえば、ゴドフスキーのトッカータやメトネルの即興曲が私のお気に入りである。アムラン作曲の練習曲も入っており、中でも前奏曲とフーガが素晴らしい。

1998年1月25-26日、ロンドン、アビー・ロード・スタジオNo.1で録音。このアルバム自体は当時東京エムプラスという会社が日本へは輸入・販売していたようだ。アムランと独占契約したhyperionのライナー・ノートが詳細で『重い』アルバムである。

このアルバムは『コンポーザー=ピアニスト』、つまり作曲家であると同時にヴィルトゥオーゾ・ピアニストであった人たちの超絶技巧作品を集めたものだ。面白いのはその中にマルカンドレ・アムラン自身も含まれていることだ。彼は3・4・17曲目で自作の練習曲3曲を披露している。

かなりクラシック音楽に精通している、という自意識が強い方でも知らない曲ばかりだと思う。そしてこのアルバムでこれらを聴くと、なぜこれほどの素晴らしい曲が今まで誰の手によっても演奏されてこなかったのか、と思うと思う。それだけ達観し、超絶した作品集だ。所謂、有名作曲家の有名曲だけを聴いていて、知っているつもりになっていないか、とアムランは言いたげである。

これらの佳曲を何故今までの有名ピアニストたちが誰もこうした形で取り上げなかったのか非常に不思議だ。それ故余計にアムランの気品溢れる超絶技巧とその研究熱心さに感動してしまうのだ。
