　サンタナの第二作目となる本作は、「ブラック・マジック・ウーマン」、「僕のリズムを聞いとくれ」、「君に捧げるサンバ」と言ったヒット曲に加えて、叙事詩の様な「ネシャブールの出来事」などカラフルな魅力満載の大名盤である！　ジャケットデザインが内容を表している様に感じる。

　サンタナのギター、ローリーのヴォーカル＆キーボード、シュリーヴのドラムス、チェピートのパーカッション … 全てがノリに乗っている。

初期のサンタナのアルバムの中でどれが名盤かと言えば一般的には「キャラ
バンサライ」を挙げる人が多いであろう。確かに「キャラバンサライ」は
傑作であり、サンタナのアルバムとしてのみならず、全ロック史上に燦然と
輝く名盤である。しかし、個人的にはこの「天の守護神」を挙げたい。

なぜならこのアルバム一枚の中に広大なサンタナミュージックのエッセンス
が全て凝縮されているからだ。「僕のリズムを聞いとくれ」は彼らの代
表的ナンバーとなり、「君に捧げるサンバ」はこの後「哀愁のヨーロッパ」
へと進化する。「ネシャブールの出来事」のような先進的なフュージョン

サウンドも本作がアナログ盤でリリースされた’７０年にすでに演ってしま
っているから恐ろしい。そして「ブラックマジックウーマン」はその後の
ヴォーカル入りの曲の根幹を成すナンバーとなり、’００年のグラミー受賞
の原動力となった「スムース」にまで脈々と受け継がれている。もちろん、

それ以降のヴォーカルナンバーにもそれは続いていくのである。

マイルス・デイビスの「ビッチェズ・ブリュー」と同じ
イラストレータによるジャケットが印象的なアルバムです。
プロデューサーもマイルスと同じテオ・マセロだったと思います。

サンタナはどれもジャケットが良いので、レコードが出るたびに
躊躇なく購入していました。

本作に続く「サンタナIII」と「キャラバンサライ」も
成長期の勢いに溢れた傑作なので聞いて損はないと思います。

その後の作品では「ムーンフラワー」ぐらいがおすすめです。
初期の勢いはないけれど程よく熟した音です。
ウェザー・リポートの「８：３０」みたいな印象があります。

インド哲学の味が不快でなければ「ワンネス」もいいかも
しれません。
それ以降の新作は聞かなくなったので分かりませんが、
何かのご参考になれば。
