ミスチル大ブレイクとなった「ＣＲＯＳＳ　ＲＯＡＤ」収録の５thアルバム。
これ以前のアルバムでは明らかに「純愛系さわやか路線」であった彼らが
大きく進路を「青春の迷いや戸惑いに悩みながらも、未来へ立ち向かう」という方向に切った作品でもある。

初めて１００万枚売れる曲が出来た！と桜井さんが確信したという
「ＣＲＯＳＳ　ＲＯＡＤ」はチャート１位こそないものの、
ジワジワと人気を保ち、息の長い売れ行きを示した。

そして「inosent world」は彼らのこれまでの純愛系路線の頂点ともいうべき作品。
ラストの「Ｏｖｅｒ」がまた秀逸な出来栄え。
シングル化していたら最低でも１５０万枚はセールを記録していたことだろう。

「夕焼けに舞う雲　あんな風になれたならいいな　いつも考え過ぎて失敗してきたから」
これは桜井さんの実体験だろう。でなければ、こんな詞は書けない。

ここから現在に至るまでのミスチル旋風が始まるのである。
正に日本歌謡史上に名を残す「歴史的なアルバム」である！

まさにミスチルが他のバンドとは一線を画す存在であることを証明したアルバムですね。
このアルバムが当時の若い世代にもたらした影響は強かった。
ポップロックの成長とともに過去の曲達をあらゆる面で批評できるようになった今の世代が聞くとすこし陳腐な所はあるかもしれない。
彼らも「売れる曲を作る」ことに専念しすぎて「自分たちのやっている音楽というのは？」というどうしようもない悩みに向かっていくわけだ。
考えてほしいのは当時彼らが一つも悩まず「売れる」ことだけに専念していたら問題作「深海」だってできなかったはずだし、名盤「Q」もできなかっただろうし。そして何よりも時代の変化さえモノともせず、未だにこうしてどの歌手よりもトップに燦々と輝き続けていられる存在になりえただろうか・・・？
そういう風に考えていくと、個人的にはミスチルというバンドを知る上で一番外せないアルバムは「深海」ではなく、この「Atomic Heart」なのではないかと思う。

やっぱりボクもミスチルは、innocent worldからであって、
アルバムとして彼らを聴き始めた最初がこのAtomic Heartなのでした。
最近でもよく車などで聴いていますが、
近年希薄になってきたロックミスチルが楽しめる名盤だと思います。
特に、オープニングからDance Dance Dance〜ラヴ・コネクション〜innocent worldと繋がるくだりは、
毎回鳥肌物ですね。
これも名曲CROSS ROADも収録し、AsiaやRound About〜孤独の肖像〜など乾いた雰囲気の曲も聴かせます。
最後は、シングルではない名バラードOverで締めくくります。
実に良くまとまったアルバムだと思います。
若さ溢れる当時のミスチル、勢いを感じましょう！！
