Creep、ちゃんとLiveでやってるよ。2001年7月7日。オックスフォードのサウスパーク。機材トラブルにより演奏不可能となったMotion Picture Soundtrackの替わりにトムはクリープを歌った。この夏オックスフォードを訪れた自分はその光景を思い浮かべながら何かを感じた。そして、そこに立ち会えなかったことを後悔した。トムは何を思い地元凱旋ライブでこれまで封印してきたクリープを歌ったのか。その時のクリープは特別なものだったに違いない。

　曲中ひたすら「オレは変人だ！」と歌い続けるボーカルのトム・ヨーク。自分の少年時代、精神病の疑いをもたれた辛い思い出が歌詞にそのまま現れている。

　「この曲を聴くことによって、人生観が変わる」と言ってもけっして大げさではない。ギターのコードはたったの４つ、ソロも大して難しくない。力が抜けていくようなメロディーとボーカルの寂しそうな声がジャストミートしている。このバンドの５人はこんなシンプルな曲で世界中の何人に涙をもたらしたのであろうか。

　１０年近く活動しているRadiohead。いまだにクリープをライブで演奏したことがない。それだけバンドにとってパーソナルな曲だと言っていいのでは。曲の真中のトム・ヨークの叫び声は何回聞いても鳥肌がたってしまう。９０年代のブリットポップを代表する曲、間違いない！
