つい最近の報道で、ジミが軍隊を除隊になった真相が出ていました。従来は、パラシュート訓練の際に着地に失敗して足を骨折したからという理由が定説になっていましたが、実はオカマのふりをして精神的に問題があるという理由で「強制除隊」になったとか。本当のところはまさに本人のみぞ知るという感じですが、そのお陰でジミの素晴らしい音楽に触れることができるのですから、理由は何でも構わない、というのがファン心理でしょう。それにしても死後35年にもなろうとしているのに、相変わらずジミは話題を提供してくれます。

さて、1968年に発表された本作品は中期ジミの最高傑作というより、当時ミュージックシーンを席巻していたサイケ音楽の代表的作品です。ドラッグとジミの音楽との関連性はいきなり「Purple Haze」であからさまに表現されていましたが、このアルバムである意味頂点を迎えたというか、完全に昇華した感があります。ＣＤジャケットは何の変哲もないデザインですが、アナログのオリジナルは、何人もの全裸の女性が横たわっているというもの。いくらフリーセックスと言っても、商品デザインに全裸の女性を登場させることは、かなり挑戦的な出来事であったはずです。ちなみにアナログ盤は2枚組でした。

さて、肝心の音のほうですが、「Crosstown Traffic」「House Burning Down」「Voodoo Chile'」などの代表曲を改めて聴いて感じることは、ドラッグを通して見えた幻影を完全に自分のものとして掌握しているという点です。歌詞や歌で幻影的な世界を表現したミュージシャンなら結構いますが、これがギターとなるとなかなかいません。というか、空前絶後なのです（ギミックなら何人かいますけど）。これは重要なことで、確かなテクニックがないと単なる薬物中毒のデタラメになってしまいますし、そこに天才的な閃きがないと単なるテクニック至上主義に陥ってしまいます。そこを完全に両立させている点がジミが天才と言われる所以なのでしょう。

また、注意深く聴いてみると、ジミはこの時期にジャズを意識した演奏に取り組んでいるという点です。「Rainny Day,Dream Away」は一見するとジャムセッション風ですが、本来の自身の持ち味であるブルースに加えて、ジャズを融合することによって新しい音楽を創出しようとしたのではないでしょうか？しかし、実際にはバンド・オブ・ジプシーズの結成によって、よりアーシーな黒人音楽へと回帰していきましたが。

いまの時代では、とんでもなくアナクロな音楽ばかりが詰まったアルバムかも知れませんが、今のギタリストは多かれ少なかれジミの影響を受けていることは厳然たる事実ですし、大仰にいえばロックのエッセンスのほとんどが凝縮されていると言っても過言ではありません。60年代はもちろんのこと、70年代、80年代の音楽のルーツをたどる意味でも大変重要な意味をもつ作品です。

このアルバムはほんとうにいい！
形容しがたいぐらいにいいのだ！
特に１１曲目は奇跡的とも言えるような美しい曲です。死者のためのレクイエムです。一度聞いてしまったらもう最期。あなたは機関銃の弾をかいくぐり、爆弾の雨のなかをさまよう哀れな魂となります。
こんな曲ができるから早死にするわけです。

ジミヘンといえばライブという具合に記憶されているように思いますが、彼はこんなにすごいアルバムを作っていたのです。
全体的にこってりサイケですが、聞く人全てが否応無くジミヘン星雲に巻き込まれていくことでしょう。まさに不朽の名作です。

麻薬的で、ソウルフルで、大音量で聴いていると酔ってしまいそうな音楽だ。ロックの暴力性、ブルースの悲しさが、神秘的なエフェクトと渾然一体となり、ジミヘンのエネルギーが塊で、魂に働きかけてくる。パワーに圧倒されて聴くのも良い。音の好さに酔いながら聴くのも良い。神秘的な気分を感じるのも良い。
古典的な名盤ではない。今も生きている音楽を聴けるのだ。曲を聴くよりは、ジミヘンのエネルギーに酔うアルバムだ。時にはこのアルバムを取り出し、ヘッドフォンをかけて大音量で聴いてみたい。そんな気を起こさせるアルバムだ。
