Happily, Mehldau pulls it off on this critically-acclaimed 1997 release, which finds his luminous touch bringing fresh power to standards (including the opening "Blame It on My Youth," "I Didn't Know What Time It Was," and a lovely reading of the Beatles' "Blackbird") and some equally strong originals. 1996年9月4・5日ロス・エンジェルスのマッド・ハンター・スタジオで録音。『The Art Of Trio』の記念すべき第一作。プロデューサーは当然マット・ピアソン（●＾o＾●）。
まず選曲が素晴らしい。その上曲順が素晴らしい。オスカー・レバントのロマンチックなラブ・ソング『Blame It On My Youth』でスタート。1951年の『巴里のアメリカ人』の中でグランド・ピアノをいつも練習していた彼の曲です。もうこの曲が終わったあたりでこのトリオの生み出す強力な催眠力に気がつき始めるがもう遅い。どっぷりとその光り輝くダークな音の虜になっている自分に気がつきます。3.5.6.8がメルドーのオリジナル。4がビートルズの『Blackbird』。『Blackbird』をその昔ギターで練習した僕にはこのカバーの編曲がとても響きました。ギターでもポールのベーシストとしての色彩がよく出ていて5弦・6弦をダイナミックにスライドし、オクターブ奏法的に弾くこの曲をベースとピアノがよく表しています。
先達のスタンダードとオリジナル、そして誰も手を付けていないロックの名曲のスタンダード的な解釈。その知的な表現力と催眠力。メルドーの凄さと何を彼はやりたいのかが理解できる傑作だ。僕が一番好きなのはメルドーのオリジナルの6『Mignon's Song』。

まずはオープニングの"Blame It on My Youth"の豊潤なピアノ表現を聞いて，録音当時20代後半のピアニストの演奏と考えられるリスナーがどの程度いるだろうか？素晴らしい演奏である。１曲目にこうしたバラードを持って来れるところに，プロデューサーとBrad本人の自信を感じさせるが，実力を伴っているのだから文句の付けようがない。一転して軽くバウンスする2曲目の"I Did'n t Know What Time It Was"やこれまた味わい深い"Blackbird"，更には"I Fall in Love Too Easily"等，文句なしの演奏が続く。Grenadier(b)，Rossy(ds)とのコンビネーションも抜群であり，特にGrenadierのベース･ラインのピアノとの絡み具合が美しい。Mehldauのブレークのきっかけとなった「トリオの芸術｣シリーズ第一作である。

ブラッドメルドーの人気を決定つけたともいわれるトリオの第一作です。現トリオでは、ｄｒがジェフバラードに変わりましたが、当アルバムでは、ジョージロッシーが務めています。
サウンド的には、現トリオ同様、自作とカバー曲からなるのですが、叙情性溢れる曲と、スウィング感ある曲が半々と言う感じで、現トリオに比べると、叙情性ある曲が多い印象でしょうか。
やはり聴き所は、メルドーのピアノ。力強く、しなやかなタッチで、叙情性ある曲も、スウィング感ある曲も、自在に弾きこなしています。バックのｂのラリーグレナディア、ｄｒのジョージロッシーも的確なプレイでメルドーのｐをサポートしています。
現トリオに比べると、一聴した際の印象は薄いかも分かりませんが、聴くたびに味わい深くなる魅力的なアルバムです。
