5.0 out of 5 stars ピーター・セテラ脱退。新しいシカゴ、第１弾アルバム！, 2005/11/8
　ピーター・セテラ脱退後、ジェイソン・シェフをボーカル／ベースに迎えたこのアルバム、当時「長い夜」のリメイクが話題になるものの、それは不評の声がほとんどだった。個人的にはよく出来ていると思うのだが、オリジナルとは全く別ものと言ってもいい印象を与えるアレンジとボーカルが代わったことで昔からのファンには抵抗があったのだろう。しかしその後、「スティル・ラブ・ミー」など次々とシングル・ヒットが生まれ、それなりの評価を得ることになる。結果的には昔からのファンが離れ、多くの新しいファンを生み出したともとれるアルバム。楽曲は若いリスナーにも充分アピール出来るポップで親しみやすいものばかり。「１６」、「１７」で確立させた「バラードのシカゴ」というイメージはここでも打ち出されており、大ヒットした先の「スティル・ラブ・ミー」、「フェイスフル」、「アイ・ビリーヴ」などでそれはますます定着する。ジェイソン・シェフのボーカルも若々しく、ピーター・セテラの表現力には及ばないものの、かなりの実力を持ったシンガー。デイヴィッド・フォスターのプロデュースは相変わらず見事。この人の手にかかると、その作品の魅力は何倍にもなるから凄い。ボビー・コールドウェル書き下ろしの「ナイアガラ・フォールズ」も傑作。小ヒットに終わったものの、力強いホーンがかっこいい隠れた名曲だ。

　信じ難かったP.Ceteraの脱退劇だったが、幸運にもJ.Scheffというヤング・ガイがCHICAGOにやって来た。彼はベーシストでありヴォーカルもとれた。しかも、P.Ceteraに似ているとされたハイ・トーンな声・・・確かにラッキーとしか言いようがない。だが、ラッキーのひと言では余りあるものを彼は持っていた。それはソング・ライティングもこなせる音楽的才能・・・彼のソロ・アルバムも聴いてみてもらいたい。おススメは、R.Lamm、B.Champlin、J.Scheffの3人が揃ってヴォーカルをとった“One More Day”。

リードヴォーカル脱退。よほどのことがない限り普通乗り切るのは難しい局面ではないでしょうか？各時代でイニシアチブを握る人が違っていたシカゴだけになんとか持ちこたえれたのかな〜と思う快作だとおもいます。１６から外部ソングライターを積極的に起用していたんで楽曲に関しては申し分ないとおもいます。随所にロバートの歌声も以前だったら少ないのが若干増えたし、ジェイソンの歌声とそれをプロデュースするフォスターさんが上手に引き立てる。Will you still love me? の１６からの流れを踏襲する珠玉の名曲。hard to say i`m sorry にまったく劣ってないと思います。シカゴというバンドからのシングルでなければもっと上の評価をもらってもおかしくないんではないでしょうか。これは言いすぎかもですが、１６、１７ときてこれだけの作品をつくったのはすばらしいと思います。
この作品からビルチャンプリンの存在が更に大きくなったような気がします。ソングライティングでも　I believe で抜群のセンスを発揮してますし　It`s alrightでのダイナミックなリードヴォーカル。フロントマンとしてピーターの後を引き継がなければいけない事情はなんとも気の毒だったとおもいますが、１９では彼の存在が更にバンドにとって大きなウェイトを占めていくのを考えると１８での世代交代みたいなものの一応の成功は評価できるとおもいます。先日１７までのリイシューがでてましたが個人的になんで１８は・・と思うのはじぶんだけでしょうか・・。
ＰＶでかっこよくなったビルを見るたびに「いろいろあったんだろうな・・」と思った当時でした。
