【プロフィール】
セッション・ミュージシャンとしてのキャリアを持つジミー・ペイジ（g）を中心に、彼が在籍していたヤードバーズを引き継ぐ形でロバート・プラント（vo）、ジョン・ポール・ジョーンズ（b）、ジョン・ボーナム（ds）の4人で1968年に結成。デビュー前にも関わらず前渡し金20万ドルという破格の待遇でアトランティック・レコードと契約し、69年デビュー・アルバム『レッド・ツェッペリン』を発表。ブルースをベースにしたパワフルなサウンドと、それと互角にわたりあうプラントのヴォーカルで人気を集める。その後もブルースのみならず、ソウル、フォーク、トラッド、レゲエ、民族音楽といったさまざまな音楽的要素を自らのサウンドに反映させ、独自の地位を築く。75年にはバンド自身のレーベル、スワン・ソングを設立、79年にはシンセサイザーを導入した意欲作『イン・スルー・ジ・アウト・ドア』を発表するが、80年ボーナムの急死により、解散を余儀なくされる。

ジミー・ペイジのリフがとても長く、ジョン・ポール・ジョーンズ/ジョン・ボーナムのリズムがとても深淵な『Led Zeppelin II』。この定番作品が手を貸して築いたヘヴィ・メタルというジャンルが何十年と追いつこうとしているが、このアルバムを超えることはできないでいる。不思議はない。『Led Zeppelin II』は、このバンドが途方もない中世のファンタジーをあまりに深追いしてしまう前の時代を捉えており、これがツェッペリンにとっておそらく最高の時代だったからだ。とにかく、轟音の「Whole Lotta Love」がトップ5入りするヒットとなり、「Bring It on Home」はイギリスの白人ブルースとしてはほぼ最高の激しさとツイストを生むことに成功している

それまでの概念をぶち壊して、他に類をみないほどの
前衛的・先進的なギターリフで溢れているが
その中でもハートブレイカー・・・

偏屈なのに伸縮自在、硬質なのに柔軟
こんなリフはほんとペイジしか作れないと思う。

そしてモビー・ディックでのボーナムの表現力・・・

叩き出されたビートの響きを通して空間全体を振動で
満たしてくれる。時に精密、時に柔軟な表現力の高さには圧倒させられる。

１９６９年の秋、時は大阪の千里丘陵の世界万国博を目前に控えた数ヶ月前に発売されたこのＬＺの２枚目は、ひょっとしてビートルズを超えたのでは？と思わせるほどの衝撃を私に与えてくれました。「胸いっぱいの愛を」で始まってからあっという間の４５分間です。「レモンソング」のギター、「ハートブレーカー」から「リビング・ラビング・メイド」へのつなぎの一瞬、最後の「ブリング・イット・オン・ホーム」まで、毎日毎日、繰り返し繰り返し聞いたものです。前作のブルースを下地とした構成から、オリジナリティが増したというかよりロックっぽくなり、トータルコンセプトアルバムというような明確な線を打ち出していなくても全体の構成が静と動が上手く組み合わされて実に良く練られたトータルアルバムという感じを与えます。これほど１枚のレコードが短く感じられたレコードはそれまでなかったと記憶しております。その時代に与えた影響度という意味ではまさしく超弩級の１枚です。

ベスト盤から聴くのもいいが、やはりこの２から聴いていただきたいですね。天国への階段やロックンロールなど有名な曲が多いため最初に４を聴く方が多いとは思いますが、勢いとパワーが感じられるこのアルバムを最初に聴くと、４から聴き始めた人に比べ、より深みにはまること請け合いです。このあと1から順番にどうぞ！
