   スコット・ラファロ＆ポール・モチアンを擁するビル・エヴァンス・トリオは画期的だったが、残念なことにその活動期間は短かった。というのも、61年7月にラファロが自動車事故のため25歳の若さで急逝してしまったからだ。本作はラファロが事故死する11日前にヴィレッジ・ヴァンガードで録音されたライヴ盤。この時の演奏は『ワルツ・フォー・デビー』と本作に分散収録されており、どちらもすばらしい内容だ。
   選曲的にはスタンダード中心の『ワルツ・フォー・デビー』のほうが親しみやすいが、スコット・ラファロを中心に考えた場合は本作のほうが好適。なぜなら、こちらにはラファロのオリジナル「グローリアズ・ステップ」「ジェイド・ヴィジョンズ」とその別テイクが収録されており、加えてスタンダード曲でもラファロのベース・ソロをたっぷりと聴けるからだ。
   エヴァンス・トリオの演奏は、三位一体という言葉で表現されることが多い。それは3者の協調関係が二等辺三角形ではなく、正三角形をなしていたからだ。キース・ジャレットのスタンダーズ・トリオの原点がここにある。（市川正二）

This live recording by the Bill Evans Trio at the Village Vanguard on 25 June, 1961 marked the end of one of the most sublime instrumental combinations in jazz history when bassist Scott LaFaro died in a car accident 10 days later. This unit is underdocumented because Evans, a notorious perfectionist, was reluctant to record. The interchange between Evans on piano, LaFaro on bass and Paul Motian on drums is balletic in its balance of emotional beauty and technical precision. Multiple takes of "Gloria's Step", "Alice in Wonderland", "All of You" and "Jade Visions" show how the invention these players brought to each performance makes repeated material sound like movements in a suite. --John Swenson

　エバンス道入門者は、大抵、本作の姉妹盤「ワルツ・フォー・デビー」から入る事と思うが、ラファロの追悼盤として先んじて出されたと言う本作の方は、親しみ易さではデビーに一歩譲るが、渋い選曲と言い、濃密なロマンチシズムと言い、総合的な魅力では引けを取らない、ピアノトリオの記念碑的名作である。マイルスが"& Modern Jazz Giants"で演奏した"Solar"など、同じ曲かと思えるほど、曲のメロディーが持つ以上の魅力ある演奏を繰り広げている。
　クールな"Solar"と対照的に、"Alice in Wonderland"の優しいメロディーは、本作の親しみやすさに大きく貢献している。最後の"Jade Visions"も同様。

　本作品には多くの別テイクが追加されていて、それはそれ、とってもオイシイけど、オリジナル盤の持つ曲配置に愛着を持つ古いファンとしては、ちとアレである。

実はエヴァンスが好きになりはじめた当初、「どうもこのＣＤは全体的にパッとしない」と思っていた。　だからろくに聴きもせずに、ＣＤ棚に収めていました。イスラエルやゴメスとのＣＤも沢山いいものがあるのでそちらの方をよく聴いていました。むしろ、そちらの方が聴きやすいと思っていた。久しぶりにこのＣＤをまた聴いてみた。　このＣＤはかなりすばらしい。特にはじめパッとしないと思っていた　Alice　in Wonderland は凄いです。　エヴァンスのピアノとラファロのベースが寄り添うようにして奏でている。　おかしな発言ですが、男と女のように感じました。　お客さんはおしゃべりしていて雑音が多く、灰皿を回してしまう音までするのですが、そんなこと一つも気にすることなく心で演奏しています。　あの時、エヴァンスはどんなことを思い、感じ、演奏していたのだろう....。　考えるだけでゾクゾクしてしまいます。　是非、まだ聴いていない方には聞いて欲しいです。出来れば、５回くらい連続して聴いていただきたい。　きっと気に入ると思います。

「ワルツ・フォー・デビイ」と同日録音のライヴ版です。
当然音質や演奏の雰囲気などは、この2枚は共通しています。
ですから、「ワルツ・・・」を気に入った方は当然こちらも違和感無く聞くことが出来ます。
ちなみにベースのスコット・ラファロは、この演奏の後まもなくして事故死しています。
アルバムの最後の曲はこのラファロの作曲によるもので、

彼にとってこの曲が人生最後の演奏となります。
長めの曲が多いので、ラファロやメンバー個々のソロも堪能できます。

エヴァンスがお好きな方には｢ワルツ・・」と共にお奨めの一枚です。
