本居宣長(1730年6月21日(享保15年5月7日) - 1801年11月5日(享和元年9月29日)と言うと小林秀雄と頭の中に入っている。しかし、その小林秀雄の本居宣長をいつの日か読もうと思っていたのだが、未だ手付かず。また小林秀雄の講演カセットも図書館から借りてあるのだが（今はCDで発売している）聞いていない。池田晶子氏が小林秀雄を尊敬してやまなかったのは有名であり、なんとか小林氏の本居も読まねばと思いつつ、まずは今回、現代語訳の分かりやすいと思われ文章に接する事になった。
玉くしげ：紀州藩主の求めに応じて、藩の政治のあるべき姿を述べたもの
玉くしげ別巻：まことの道について述べたもの
直毘霊（なおびのみたま）：古道論
全体を通して感じたのは、1787年に書かれた玉くしげが古さを感じないことである。すなわちモラルであるとか倫理であるとかが現代でもおおよそそのまま通じるのである。
贅沢は敵であり、貧富の格差増大を憂い、貨幣経済の弊害、権力を持つもののあるべき姿など。また一部の学問のみを良しとする態度（儒学に対して）を批判している。また百姓に対する税などによる締め付けは移動禁止は国にとって不利益であると指摘する。そして職種によらず分不相応の暮らしは宜しくないと。また中華思想あるいは中華文明に対してはかなり辛辣に異を唱えており、神国日本を土台に国家繁栄を図らねばならないと主張している。
まだまだ読み込みが浅いので、さらにじっくりと読まねばと思う。

最初の２０ページほどめくっただけで、日本と中国の弱点があっという間に露見する。それも現代の両国の実情に、完全に合致している。
あれほど多くの聖人を排出し、今や独善的中華思想が吹き荒れる中国で「太平の世が続いたことがない」のはなぜか？
その中国に対抗するはずの日本はどうか。江戸時代に生きた、宣長は、本業を忘れて投機に走り者が増えたり、賃金不相応の重責を持って働くことや不必要な浪費はおかしいと説く。つまり、格差社会、サービス残業、官僚機構といった現代日本への痛烈な批判でもある。
溜飲が下がる、とはこのことだ。
