『ゴールドベルグ変奏曲』です。バッハの曲名と同じタイトルですが、まぁ直接関係はありません。
この作品は著者がデビュー作を書く直前に書いた作品、言うなれば処女作を加筆修正は最小限にしてほぼそのままの形で出版したものです。

栴檀は双葉より芳し、と言いますが、若い頃の作品であってもレベルが高いです。さすがに『“骨牌使い(フォーチュン・テラー)”の鏡』あたりと比較すると色々な面で粗が目立ち若さが露呈していますが。
中盤、普賢が捜査をする場面は、安っぽいハリウッドアクション映画の刑事コンビもののようなノリで、この作品の雰囲気、普賢のキャラには合っていなかった感じもします。
ヒロインの恋と成長の物語であるのは確かですが、とても弱かったヒロインが恋をしたとたんに急に強くなり過ぎている感じは受けました。骨牌使い以降の作者ならばその辺の過程も繊細に描けていたのでしょうけど。

バッハは無関係と言いましたが、音楽とは密接に関係した話です。主人公や他のキャラの「歌」の描写はスゴイの一言です。これぞ究極の芸術でしょうね。
