中学英語レベルの基本構文が口をついてスラスラ出てくるようになったら、次のステップは出来るだけ多くの定型表現を覚えることです。そのための教材としてオススメなのが本書です。

本書の最大の特徴は、別売の音声教材の構成です。日本語→ナチュラル・スピードの英語→ゆっくりした英語、という３段階で、使ってみればわかるのですが、これは中級者がシャドーイングをする際に最適の構成です。日本語部分で意味を、ゆっくり英語部分で英語の文を、ナチュラル・スピード部分で英語の音を、それぞれ確認できるからです。本書の発刊後、似たようなコンセプトの書籍（ＣＤ付の表現辞典）が何冊も出ましたが、この音声教材の構成という点で、本書がベストだと思います。

全部でＣＤ６枚、収録６時間の大作ですが、全体を３回程度、合計１８時間くらいシャドーイングすれば、だいたいの内容は覚えることができるでしょう。

なお、本書は「辞典」というタイトルですが、当然のことながら、全ての表現を網羅している訳ではありません。本当に網羅的な英会話辞典など作れないし、仮に作っても教材としての意味はないでしょう。ですから、「○○という表現が載っていない」という理由で本書を批判するのは的外れです。重要なものからどんどん覚えていくのが正しい学習態度だと思います。

本書の唯一の欠点は、値段です。この点はちょっと看過できないので、値下げへの期待を込めて星４つ。

ワーホリで海外に行く前に家庭教師の兄に薦められて購入。友達との会話にはあんまり役に立たなくて困っていたが外人と一緒に住んでみた時初めてこれの力が発揮できた。それ以来手放せない1冊。日常会話から電話での会話、手紙など幅広くのっているので買っても損はないでしょう。どちらかというと友達との会話より日常的なことが主なので海外へ行く友達には必ず薦めて喜ばれています。

この本はとても役に立った。僕はアメリカに留学する前にこの本を友達からプレゼントされた。それ以来これを手放せなくなった。生活の場面、場面、例えば電話の応対とか買い物をする時とか自分の言いたいことが言えなかった時は自分の部屋に戻ってからコイツをぱらぱらとめくるのである。すると言いたかったコトバがここで見つかるのである。英語を話すにはより多くのフレーズを脳に蓄積させ、それらしい発音になるまで何回も口に出して言ってみる事が必要であると思う。「あっ、こんな時英語でなんて言えばいいんだろう？」って思ったことのある人へ。この本が解決してくれます。おすすめです。
