本の厚みは約２cm。読み応え十分です。

この本のすばらしい点は、一つの文様の項目中に
その文様の変形型がいくつものっているので、
それらの文様の共通部分に着目することで
その文様の本質がさらによくわかる点です。

たとえば「立涌（たてわく）」という項目では
「立涌」のほかにも
「雲立涌」「波立涌」「桐立涌」「葡萄立涌」「破れ立涌」

などさまざまな立涌の文様が紹介されているので、
それらの文様の共通項である、向かい合わせに並べられた
波打つ縦縞が立涌文様の本質であることが理解できます。

この本質がわかっていれば、たとえ本に載っていない文様に
出会っても、その文様を各要素に分解して、その文様が大きく
何の文様の部類に分類されるのか理解できるでしょう。

その応用性を身につけられるのがこの本の良さといえます。

文様にはすべてふりがながふってあり、４cm四方の模様の
モノクロ図案がそれぞれついています。
さらにキモノや美術工芸品などに使われた例も豊富な写真で
紹介されています。

惜しまれる点はカラーページが少ない点です。
オールカラーだったらさぞかし美しい本になっていただろうと

残念です。そういう意味で☆を５つではなく４つにしました。

￥３０００という価格に、買うまで時間がかかりました。手元に来て大興奮。紙がいい、写真、デザインももの凄く豊富なんです。狂言の肩衣の大胆なデザインに興味を持ち、他の和の文様も知りたくて捜した末、見つけた本です。高いと思っていた価格も、内容を知った今は、「視覚デザイン研究社」に感謝です。

日本の伝統文様の勉強をしているのですが、なかなか説明文付の文様集ってないんです。その中でこの本は図版がいっぱい載っているし、見ているだけで勉強になり、図版の大きさも統一してあって、非常に見やすいです。
文様って長い歴史の中で作り上げられてきた物なので、歴史と共に勉強しなくては意味がないので歴史と一緒に文様が学べますよ！歴史も基本的な歴史なので入門にはぴったりだと思います。
また、歌舞伎の役者の屋号や家の紋も説明付ですし、役者色もきちんと色見本付でイメージを持ちやすい作り方です。ただ、屋号のページはもう少し整理してあるとよかったかなとは思いますが…。

なかなか文様の名前って見ないので、美術品を見るときに今まで気に留めなかった文様の名前や由来に興味を持てる内容で面白いと思います。
