　本書はウイリアム・ワイラー（あの「ベンハー」や「ローマの休日」の監督です！）監督で、オリビア・デ・ハビランド（「風と共に去りぬ」のメラニー役）がアカデミー主演女優賞を取った『女相続人』の原作で、本のタイトルとしても、こっちの方が有名です。
　

　内容は、”よくあるメロドラマ・今はやりの純愛モノ”と言ってしまえば、それまでなのですが、ジェイムスはいかにも私達の周囲にもいそうな人物の心理と行動を、皮肉とユーモアを込めて、糸巻きの糸を解すように軽快に・丁寧に読者に示してくれ、個性の衝突の中で、変貌を遂げていく人物のうち、誰の視点から話を見るかにより悲劇の色合いが異なってくる所に、二重・三重の面白味があり、どんどん先を読みたくなります。

　そして、結局終わってみれば、皆が皆互いに足を引っ張り合った挙句、誰も救われないのです。敢えて言えば、劇中劇を堪能したぺ二マン夫人（と読者？）位でしようか。人間の複雑さと人生の矛盾・・名誉と富は人にとって、”もたらす”以上に”奪う”ものである・・ヤハリ一筋縄では行かないんだな、これが。
　
　

　ジェイムズ作品は、その顕微鏡を覗くかのような緻密な心理描写と、"誰も救われない"ストーリーの悲劇性から、一般に敬遠されがちですが、本書は、分量的にも読みやすくジェイムズにしては、比較的”あっさり”しています。そして女心を描かせたら、彼の右にでる作家はいないという事が、この中篇だけでも十分納得できます。

　昔から、多くの作品が映画化されるも、消化不良に終わらされる”監督泣かせ”（そして文字通り”女泣かせ”）の作家です。その事こそが、彼の作家としての力量を示しているのではないでしょうか。
　最近、ちょっとしたジェイムズブームです♪（「アザーズ」も実は『ねじの回転』が原作って知ってました？）純愛好きも、純愛嫌いも（？？）、ジェイムズの入門書として、是非、一読あれ☆
