マーテリ・レベンスクロフト,アンナ
主としてオフィステクノロジーの訓練や指導のバックグランドを持つ。EuroPython、PyCon、OSCONではPythonのさまざまなトピックスについて講演し、またいくつものカンファレンスでライトニングトークを担当した

アッシャー,デイヴィッド

pythonは「どのようにして豊富な標準モジュールを上手く使うか」が大事になる
標準モジュールが強力な言語かつ、物事を行うやり方をなるべく多様にしないようにしている言語です。
(少なくとも、本やネット情報を読んでいる限りではそのようです。Perlとはいろいろ真逆な言語です。)

そういうこともあって、クックブックは他の言語より重要そうであり、
この本の内容が、よくある「テキスト処理」から、気になる人が多い
「GUI,CGIプログラミング」、また上級者向けの「分散プログラミング」に
ついてのレシピもカバーしていることから買って損はないと思います。

他の方のレビューで、第三版があるらしいとのことですが、
現在(2009/04/11)、オライリーで確認する限りでは、クックブックは二版
までしかないので、クックブックを買うならこれになります。
(おそらく、初めてのPython第三版の事をおっしゃられているのだと思います。)
pythonは3000(3.0)を除いて後方互換が非常にしっかりした言語であるので、
全く役に立たないということはないと思います。

自分が思った欠点は、自分のような初学者にはリファレンス本を隣に置いて
おかないとサンプルプログラムが何をしているのかが分からない時がある
(標準モジュールが沢山ありますから、その個々の説明は割愛している)。
日本語を扱う時の注意が書かれたページが少ない。というところです。

pythonを勉強するなら、「初めてのpython」を見て、
「クイックリファレンス」(or pydoc)を見て、その後、
なれてきたら「クックブック」を買った方が良さそうと思いました。

独学でしかプログラミングをしたことがなかったので、
非常に役に立ちました。

同じ処理でもよりよいアルゴリズムで書くためのヒントがたくさんあります。

少しでもパフォーマンスのよいPythonプログラムをしたい人にはぜひおすすめしたいです。

つい先月(2009年3月頭)に購入しました。しかし、pythonの対象バージョンが2.4以前のもので、内容が古くてリファレンスとしては不適切な本と言えます。ちゃんと対象バージョンを調べてから買えということだとは思いますが…。

現在ではpython 2.5以降、3.0に対応した第3版が出版されているようなのでそちらをオススメします。
