『歓楽の家』『無垢の時代』で知られる２０世紀初期のアメリカの女流作家ウォートンの没後に出版された幽霊物語集。ゴースト・ストーリーをこよなく愛した作者が流麗に織りあげた、静謐で端正な語り口が味わえる七篇が収められています。
『カーフォル』は、フランスの古城で三百年前に起きた夫婦の犬殺しにまつわる悲劇が描かれます。『ジョーンズ氏』は、イングランドの古屋敷を管理する初老の男の謎を巡る話です。『柘榴の種』は、ニューヨークに暮らす新妻が夫宛に届く差出人の名が無い手紙を見つけるが、やがて亡くなった前妻の存在が意識されて、幸せな家庭が崩壊してゆく。『晩霊節』は、コネティカットの屋敷に従姉を訪ねた女性が晩霊節のイブに、陸のマリーセレスト号事件のような状況に遭遇する物語です。
小説を味わう尺度には、執筆された時代が大きな要素を占めると思います。本書には喧騒に満ち満ちた現代社会には無い、古き良き時代の価値観や人間模様が多く含まれていると思います。私にとっては、随所に時代の息吹が感じられ、今読み返しても貴重で愛すべき物語世界を内包していて、どうかそのままの姿をとどめていて欲しいと思えるのです。

　この作者は、スコセッシ監督の　”エイジ　オブ　イノセンス”　の原作者らしい。アメリカ人であるが、小児期からヨーロッパ各地を訪れていたらしく、古いヨーロッパの香りがただよう、７つの怪談がのせられている。怪談をかいておきながら、作者は、大変な恐がりだったようで、正直あまり怖くはない怪談である。特に、いろいろな怪談や、怖い話を聞き慣れたものとしては、、。
　いくつかの共通しているテーマは、古い時代の、”不幸な結婚”に伴う悲劇や、死んでまで主人に使える”忠実な召使い”といったところ。文章も、描写もきれいで、静謐な雰囲気を醸し出している。

　ウォートンは私の好きな作家である。『エイジ・オブ・イノセンス』、短篇「ローマ熱」（『20世紀アメリカ短篇選』上、岩波文庫）は傑作である。しかしこの怪談集は、やはり今まで邦訳されなかっただけのことはあるな、と思える。毎日新聞書評で若島正が絶賛していた「石榴の実」など、最初からネタが割れているし、ほかも、今なら駆け出しの作家でも書きそうなものだ。要するにホラーというジャンルがその後ずいぶん進化してしまった結果だろう。ファンとしては残念だが…。もしこれを読んで、ウォートンがつまらない作家だと思った人は、ぜひ「ローマ熱」を読んでもらいたい。
