私は、クラウンが大好きです。普段、私もバルーンを使って子どもたちやお年寄りの方たちに見せていますので、軽い気持ちで買いました。この本の中でパッチ・アダムスという名前が出てきます。この方は、ホスピタルクラウンの第一人者です。作者が彼の家を訪ねたときに派手な衣装で眠たそうに出てきます。いつでも彼はクラウンです。パッチは、「夢は道化師のいない世の中になること」と言います。世界平和を願う彼のことばに感動を覚えました。考えずに読んでみてください。子どもたちの笑顔の大切さを知ってください。

大棟さんは最近新聞やテレビでも頻繁に紹介されているが、
この本を読むと、プロとは何かがひしひしと伝わって来ます。

壮絶な治療の場である小児病棟に、自己満足的なボランティア
マインドだけで行けるはずがありません。

苦しみ抜いて、悩み抜いて、考え抜いた先にある、
プロの姿をこの本から読み取ることが出来ました。

この方は、きっとこれからの日本を変える原動力になります。

「愛と涙の感動ストーリー」のタタキ文句にはうんざりしたが、
「よく、子どもたちにしかられます。よく、子どもたちに笑われます。
　それが僕の仕事です」という（恐らく）著者自身の言葉にしびれて買ってみた。

この本に綴られていたのは、当事者以外にはゲップが出るだけの愛でもなければ
一山いくらで安売りされる感動でもなかった。ただ子どもが笑ってくれるのが嬉しいという、
小児病棟で子どもたちと戯れるクラウンのシンプルな本心だ。
だからこそ楽しく読めるし、読後には暖かいものを胸の中に感じられる。

とは言え、やはり楽しいばかりの絵空事ではない。アメリカ・フロリダ州のホスピスで
おばあちゃん道化師とペアを組んだとき以来、著者が悩み続けている課題は私の心にもリアルに響いた。
そんなシリアスな局面にも直面しつつも、やっぱり著者は子どもに楽しんで欲しくて大奮闘している。
読む方もただ著者のおどけっぷりを楽しみながら読めばいいと思う。
恐らく、著者は大人にも楽しんで欲しいのだから。
