自分もネコを飼っているので、しみじみ感動しました。
ネコというのは、古代エジプトでは神のひとつとして神聖視されていましたが、日本ではそうではありませんでした。
化け猫なんていう言葉があるくらいなのですから、どちらかといえば恐れられていたのでしょう。
ネコはわがままで独善的、プライドが高いなどとよく表現されますが、このネコはその汚名を最後に返上しました。読んでいて気持ちよかったですね。
挿絵がどうも中国をイメージさせますが、西洋人からみれば日本も中国も同じようなものなのでしょう。

あるお寺で、『この寺の涅槃図には、猫が描かれている』と、住職からお聞きしたのが、この本を読むきっかけでした。
この本の作者、エリザベスコーツワースは、大正時代に日本に来て、この本を書いたのだそうです。
それが、アメリカでニューベリー賞を受賞しています。本の内容が日本的なものだけにアメリカで評価されたことに興味を覚えました。

そういう観点から読んでも面白いと思いました。

仏教の国にありながら、ろくにお釈迦様の生い立ちも涅槃図のいわれも知らない自分の無知に、たびたび驚く。
猫が気位が高かったせいでお釈迦様に永の別れの挨拶に行かず、
涅槃図に描かれていないことをこの本を読んで初めて知った。

貧しい絵師が、猫を飼い始めたとたんに運が向き、とある寺の本堂の涅槃図を描くことになった。
ところが涅槃図には猫はいない。いないものを描くわけにはいかない。
他の動物たちを描き終わり、絵師は迷いに迷った末…。

最後まで読んだとき、わたしは泣いていることに気がついた。
釈迦の一生と猫の一生を淡々と書いたこの薄っぺらな本に、
慈悲の心がたっぷりと詰まっていた。
