世界一のベーシスト、ジャコ･パストリアス。
それは彼の死後も変わらない。
彼と似た音のベーシストはいる。しかし、彼ではない。
彼の音、弾き方、彼の曲。
それらをあわせたものを超えるベーシストは
いまだいない。
この本を読んで、何故あのような状態まで彼は逝かなければならなかったのか、疑問と悔しさが残る。

アルコールとドラッグと病気のせいだけではない気がする。

「俺は子供が4人もいて、クリスマスなのに家に帰れない。」
と言ったとか、
娘の写真を眺めながら泣いていたという文章を読むと
せつなくなる。
もしトレーシーと離婚していなかったら・・・
ウェザー･リポートから脱退していなかったら・・・

もう少し彼は踏ん張って生きていけたのではないかなどと
思う。

ジャコパストリアス・コムへ行ってみると
世界中のツアー先から家族へ送った絵葉書が出ている。
愛情のこもった文章が書いてある。
彼は本当は家庭的な人間だったのだと思う。
そして、家族の支えがほんとうはなによりも
欲しかったのじゃないだろうか。

これは私の想像でしかない。

真実は闇のなかだ。

この本を読むとその真実がわかるようでわからず
もどかしく、またジャコを救えなかった悔しさと哀しさが
襲ってくる。

そして同時にジャコをいまだ愛している自分に気がつく。

私の回りでジャコをリアルタイムで経験した人へ始めて「見た」「聞いた」時の事を聞くと、「ぶったばげた！」とか「えっ！？」としか言葉が出なかったとか皆一様に言葉にならなかった印象を話してくれる。私も同じでした。全く想像も出来ない文明に始めて出くわした時のカルチャーショックとはまさにこんな感覚なんだろうと。
前半は筆者や登場するミュージシャン達も私たちと同じ印象であったと再確認させられる本です。特に筆者がジャコと初めて出会った（発見・発掘された）下りは何度読んでも痛快です。
後半は天才ミュージシャンの破滅に至る経緯がかかれており、悔しい気持ちで一杯になりますがジャコの生涯、音楽観、人間性を知る非常に良い本です。

表紙の写真だけでも買う価値有りです！

ジャコ・パストリアスといえばウェザーリポートでの活躍やファーストアルバムでの衝撃が強く印象付けられているが、ここではそんなジャコの全盛期についてはあまり触れられていない。そこに至るまでのジャコの生い立ちや音楽的背景が赤裸々につづられている。ジャコ・ファンだけでなく音楽ファン必見の一冊であろう。
