“マイマイ”って、あれのこと？と思って手にしました。私の故郷でもこう言っていたので、違和感がないのですが、マイマイとはつむじのこと。どんなマイマイかというと、アンテナのような・・・とだけいっておきましょう。
　昭和３０年、９歳の新子の目を通して見た世界が語られていきます。美しい麦畑の風景、戦争の影をひきずった大人、こっそり見た映画、学校の先生、年中行事等々が、みずみずしい感性と言葉で描かれています。昭和３０年代の空気を吸って育った私には、記憶の片鱗が重なるところも多く、面白く読みました。子供と大人の世界がくっきりと別れていた時代。しつけも世間体も、口やかましい大人がたくさんいた。地主と小作の立場なども、水面下で厳然としてあった。
　そんななかで、新子とおじいちゃんの小太郎のやりとりが、心温まるものでした。二人だけの秘密のハンモックを作ったり、“千年の川”の由来や、大陸で匪賊と戦った話をしてくれたり、新子と小太郎はまったくいいコンビです。新子はおじいちゃんからはそうしたゆったりとした愛情を受け、遠い大学で先生をしている父の東介からは、「なんでも自分の目で確かめる」ことの大切さを教えられます。正義感の強さから、新子は“確かめる”こと優先で、大人に怒られるようなことも、いっぱいしでかしてしまうのですが。
　高樹さん自身の「日本版『赤毛のアン』を書きたい」という思いが、のびのびと物語のなかで躍動していて、気持ちよく読むことができました。カバーのイラストの場面は、第４章にありますよ。

5.0 out of 5 stars 子供時代が懐かしく思い出されました。現代っ子にも一度は味わって欲しい子供の世界です。, 2009/8/15
著者とは１０歳も離れない一読者としては、著者が経験した子供時代のエピソードを書き連ねた当該著書の内容に大いに共感しました。私たちが経験した子供時代への「懐かしさ」に満たされるとともに、何か切ないような心情にも浸されました。それは返り来ぬ子供時代への郷愁感とでもいうのでしょうか。物が豊かになっていく前の時代は、遊びと言えば近所の子供が集まり、朝から晩まで、缶けり・陣取り・かくれんぼ・草野球・ドッジボール・探検・チャンバラ等で過ごしていたように思います。大家族の時代ですから、今の核家族と違い、３世代の家族がひしめき、騒々しい家庭であったと思います。老人の生も死も身近な時代でした。著者が後書で述べておられるように、「こんな子供時代を持つことができない今の子供たちに読んで欲しい。」とも思います。
