何気なく書いた作文が面白かったことから、大学へ進学させてもらえることになった孤児のジュディ。彼女が書く大学生活や出会った人達が実に生き生きと描かれていて、とても楽しい書簡集です。それまでの孤児院から、一気に華やかな女子大に来てしまったジュディ。初めて自分のお小遣いでショッピングをしたり、おしゃれをしたり、時にはお金持ちのルームメイトに憧れと嫉妬を感じたり。女の子らしいジュディの感情がズバズバと書かれていて、読んでいて爽快感を感じました。
また、謎の後継人、「あしながおじさん」の正体をつきとめたいあまりに、「あなたははげていますか？」と尋ねたりと、いたるところにユーモアが散りばめられていて、思わず笑ってしまうところがたくさんありました。また、自分が孤児だということをはじめ、友達にも話せない寂しさや苦しみも綴られていて、読んでいる「おじさん」はどんな気持ちで読んだんだろう、と想像してみるのも面白いです。この本を買ってもらった小学生の頃は、ジュディの書く大学生活の描写ばかりに心を奪われていましたが、読み手の「おじさん」の気持ちを考えながら読むと一層面白いことに気づきました。続編も面白いので（こちらはジュディの親友サリーが主役です）、いつかこの福音館の古典シリーズから出してくれないかな、なんて思っています。

孤児が幸運をつかみながら、それだけではなく、努力によって得ていく人間性。
最後はハッピーエンド。
学園で起こすどたばた喜劇。

挿絵のかわいさも作品の一部だと思う。

ps.
原作のDady Long Legは、足長お父さんという意味ではないだろうか。
あしながおじさん(dady long leg)が好きなら、
続（dear enemy:拝啓　敵さん)も気に入ると思う。

作者は、マークトウェインの姪の娘とのことである。
作者が自分の子供を産んで、すぐに亡くなったのは、あまりにも悲しい物語。
作者の自伝があれば読みたい。

あしながおじさんのｽﾄｰﾘｰが素晴しいのは言うまでもなく・・・・
どの本であしながおじさんを買おうかと迷っていたらぜひこの本がおすすめです。
忠実な訳と原作のままの挿絵です。この挿絵がユーモアたっぷりなのでおすすめします。
子どもに読ませようと、他の本を買ったところ挿絵が原作と違う事を知りとても残念で買いなおしました。挿絵も大切なので、ぜひチェックして下さい。
