水軍福地一族――と、タイトルにあるものの、北上川下流地域の戦国時代史と捉えたほうがいい。資料と説明上の制約からか、半ば近くは葛西氏の没落と伊達氏の勃興について解説されるが、北上川を大きな軸足に、地域の歴史を語りつくしたのは、なだたる郷土史家である著者の精緻な研究とフィールドワークの賜物である。
正直、著者・紫桃氏の小説調の語り口はあまり好きではないのだが、この本は他の氏の著作に比して「物語」「創作」が少ない。あとがきによると著者自身はその部分が不満なようだが、逆に著者の主張・推測の根拠がフィールドワークの成果とともに提示され、歴史を歩くロマンを創作以上に抱かせてくれると思う。

　筆者自身のルーツに当たる福地山内家の人物にスポットを当て、宮城県北上川下流域の戦国時代を中心にまとめた筆者最晩年の作品、筆者はこれまで山内氏や葛西氏、和賀氏、大崎氏など伊達氏や豊臣氏に滅ぼされた資料の乏しい謎の一族の歴史に焦点を当てて、闇に包まれていた東北地方の鎌倉時代から江戸時代までの歴史を公にし、私もこれまで大変勉強させていただいた。本作では支倉常長のローマ法王謁見までの過程や大崎葛西一揆の残党をだまし討ちにした須江山の悲劇（この地を粛清の地に選んだ理由が初めて分かった、功名が辻の山内一豊も長祖我部氏の残党を似たような方法で粛清したことがあったことを思い出した）など印象深い話が満載で非常に楽しめた。筆者がテーマとして取り上げる題材は北上川沿岸にはもう残されていないでのはないかと思えるほど過去の作品の冊数は充実しているが、そのほとんどは絶版の状態で、出版社の宝文堂が休業状態の今、過去の作品の再版の可能性はあるのか？このままでは再び北上川流域の貴重な歴史資料が再び闇に葬り去られることになるのではと心配する。ぜひともどこかの出版社が筆者の貴重な作品集の版権を買い取って、復版されることを強く望んでいる。
