試合後こう膜下出血で倒れて緊急開頭手術を受けた女子ボクサーと、生死の境にある娘の見舞いにも行かず、男と温泉旅行に行ってしまった母…

娘のリング・デビュー以来雑誌の記事や写真などをすべて切り抜き、まるで博物館のように家中に飾って喜ぶ女子キックボクサーの母…

マスクをかぶってセクシーなコスチュームで戦う総合格闘家の娘に、ともかく大反対し続ける母…

そうしたさまざまな母たちと、「女子格闘家」という、現代日本において、ある意味でいまだ「異端」である娘たちの間の微妙な関係が、インタビューと写真を通じて浮き彫りになる。

著者が女性であるがゆえに、男の聞き手ではなかなか入り込んでいけない距離にまで近づくことに成功している。

また、著者自身も独身であり、親の反対を振り切ってライターとして働き続ける女性としての思いもあいまって、非常に面白い作品に仕上がっている。

私は本があまり好きではない。
活字を読むのがめんどくさいのである。
だからいつも新聞と、趣味関連の雑誌くらいしか読まない。
あとは、映像で事足りるからだ。
　この本は格闘技関係の棚に、違和感丸出しで鎮座していた。
何だろうと手にとり、パラパラとめくった。
そして「男と旅行に行ったよね。私が生きるか死ぬかのときに」というフレーズが目に入り
つい読みはじめ、あっという間に八島親子の章を読み終えてしまった。
・・・初めての経験だった。
そう、もうすぐ齢、半世紀になろうとしている私だがこの歳まで
本屋で１０分以上立ち読みをしたことがない。
いや、正確に言うと、一冊の本を立ち読みで３ページ以上
読み倒したことがないのだ。おどろいた。
こうなったら、何日で読み終えるか、記録に挑戦だ！
３日で読み終えた。びつくりだ。
私がこんなに早く、いくら写真がおおくても、４００ページもの厚みの本を、３日で・・・。
嫁に報告したが、私の記録は信じてもらえなかった。
断言しよう。この本は、朝日新聞の次に読みやすい。(俺様しらべ)
しかも、ここが一番大事だが、面白い。
人に何かを勧めるのは得意ではないが、この本は薦めたくなる。
どなたか、私の記録に挑戦してみては？

「ママダス」と言うタイトルに引かれ、手にとって立ち読みすること３０分。あっという間に６０ページくらい読んでしまった。
でも中身は「女子格闘家」の母子の話で・・。
「格闘技」なんて言葉、私の人生で、微塵も接点ありませんでした。
って言うか、元々が争い事の嫌いなたちなもので、どちらかと言うと嫌いでした。
でも私みたいな人でも、もちろん格闘技の好きな方でも、なんの予備知識もいらずスイスイ読める。
そして単純なこと「誰にでもお母さんとお父さんが居る」という事に気づく。
いろんな家族がいて「親子の関係に正解はない。」と言う著者の言葉がとても胸に響いた。
今日は早く帰って続きを読もう。久々に夜更かしをしそうです。
