ホブズボームの「ナショナリズムの歴史と現在」と読み比べるといい。
詳しくは述べないが、両者のナショナリズムの性格規定の違いが、21世紀後のナショナリズムの行方についての各々の見解を正反対のものにしているからだ。両方の本ともに東アジア、とりわけ日本におけるナショナリズムの特殊性に言及している。政治的経済的文化的統一性、同一性が早い時期（スミスの言い方ではエスノーの段階、ホブズボウムの言い方ではプレ・ナショナリズムの段階）から形成されていたために、近代の産物のナショナリズムがあたかも古代から一貫性があるような体裁をもってしまったという特殊性に関しては、両者の見解は一致している。日本ナショナリズムを相対化するうえでは良書である。ただ（とりわけスミスについては）西欧的なナショナリズムをモデルにし、もっぱらその鋳型を後進国に
あてはめたかのような論理展開になっており、20世紀の複雑な国際関係のなかで第三世界ナショナリズムがもった原動力、とりわけ社会主義との関係をホブズボームに比べて十分とらえきれていないとおもわれる。

ナショナリズム論としては、ベネディクト・アンダーソン「想像の共同体」は非常に有名であるが、それを読んだらぜひとも読んで欲しいのが本書「ナショナリズムの生命力」である。
言ってしまえば、「想像の共同体」と対を成す本である。

これまでのナショナリズム論（特にゲルナーやホブズボウム）では、ネイションやナショナリズムは近代に作られたものに過ぎないとされてきた。
しかし、本書では、近代以前からある文化共同体、エトニに着目し、それと近代国家との連続性について議論を深めている。
つまり、近代国家の建設では、既存のエトニや神話的記憶を再集結させていく部分と、新たに作り出された部分とがあるわけである。

また、近年期待を持って語られることの多いグローバリズムについても、グローバルな地域での共通の記憶の構築は困難であるため、そう簡単に国家が乗り越えられることはないとしている。
集団アイデンティティとしてもっとも安定的なのはネイションであるともしている。


無論、アンダーソンかスミスかのような二者択一ではなく、あくまでも双方で深め合うものだろう。
そういう意味では、最初に述べたように、アンダーソンを読んだ人には是非読んでもらいたい。

　ナショナリズムについて考えるのなら多くの人に勧められる書物である。
　特にイデオロギー的な偏りが少なく、極めて興味深く且つ楽しみながら読める。
　その点は特筆されるべきだろう。
　日本のような後発国を分析するのに適しているのが本書といえる。
　特に日本で戦後の頃までは存在していたnation民族はどこへ消えたのか。
　それについても考えるヒントを多く与えてくれる。
　文芸に対する理解も深く参考になる。
　射程も広く国民国家より更に先を考えることができる。
