戦国時代，関東で一大勢力を誇っていた北条氏．その100年にわたる領国支配のうち，最も華々しい時期は今川義元・武田信玄・上杉謙信などと肩を並べた三代氏康の頃にあったと言えるかもしれない．
残念ながら，本書からは北条氏の栄華も氏康の生き様も伝わってこない．作者は初代早雲の跡を継ぎ，関東における北条氏の基盤を固めようとする二代目氏綱時代の，まだ年若かった氏康を描きたかったのかもしれない．氏綱は間違いなく大人物だった．当時，北条早雲は伊勢盛時であった．伊勢氏を改姓し，関東になじみの深い北条を名乗ったのは二代目氏綱である．そして伊豆と相模の一部のみ支配していた伊勢氏を，関東の雄にまで発展させたのも氏綱である．その庇護下にいた頃の氏康を描きたいという意図はわからなくはない．が，本書を読んでも，肝心の氏康像が浮かんでこない．
本書を，北条氏からみた戦国時代中期の関東争乱記として読むのなら，それなりのできであると思う．
