ウィーズナー,デイヴィッド
アメリカ・ニュージャージー州ブリッジウォーター生まれ。ロードアイランド・スクール・オブ・デザインでイラストレーションを学ぶ。1992年『かようびのよる』(徳間書店)、2002年『3びきのぶたたち』(BL出版)、2007年『漂流物』(BL出版)で、コールデコット賞を3度受賞。現在は、フィラデルフィアに妻と二人の子供たちと暮らす(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

真っ赤な魚の眼をアップでとらえた印象的な表紙。
よくみると眼の中に何かが映り込んでいる。
実はこれ水中カメラ、しかもかなりの年代物なのです。

海辺でたまたま、そのカメラを見つけた少年は、さっそく中の
フィルムを現像してもらいます。すると写っていたものは？
想像を超えた画像の連続に、われわれの常識は酸欠状態になる
ことまちがいなし。特に、一枚のスナップ写真を通して
時間をさかのぼっていく展開は圧巻の一言。

「細部にまで神経の行き届いた完璧な嘘＝限りなく真実」　

というウィーズナーの世界に思いっきり浸れます。
空想力で読み解く文字のない絵本。

さすがウィーズナー、と思わせる文字のない絵本。3つ目のコールデコット賞受賞作。「セクター7」などからの期待を裏切らない空想の世界が、海を舞台に展開します。ある少年が海辺で漂流物の古い水中カメラを拾います。スピード仕上げで現像した写真には、驚愕の海中の世界が広がって・・・そして写真はまだまだ続くのです。

浜に流れ着いた水中カメラが写したもの、それは…。
「百聞は一見にしかず」という言葉がぴったりな絵本。
まるでショートフィルムの絵コンテを観るよう。
どのページも細部まで凝っていて奥行きのあるつくりです。
シンプルな『漂流物』という邦題もまた良し。
まだ字の読めない子供から大人まで楽しめる、珍しい本だと思います。
