「人間が食べられていた」というと一見ショッキングだが、よくよく考えれば当たり前に思えてくる。もし自分が大自然の中に放り出されたら、どれだけ恐ろしいことか。それなのに、「人間が食べられる」ことに意外さを感じてしまうのは、自分が固定観念にとらわれている証拠なのかもしれない。本書は、「人類祖先は狩猟者だった」という説を思いこみに過ぎないと批判し、「人間が食べられていた」説を主張するが、実は完全に立証できているわけではない。その点では不完全燃焼かもしれない。しかし、本書の価値は、むしろ、疑うことなくいつのまにか拠ってしまっている固定観念を転換することの大切さ、そしてその面白さを示唆してくれるところにあると思う。読み終わる頃には、脳の中でこり固まっていたいくつかの思考回路がはじけて切り開かれるような感覚が味わえるだろう。

ヒトは他のサルと同じようにその歴史のほとんどを肉食動物の捕食の対象として過ごしてきた・・・

ヒトは進化の中である日いきなり、特別な存在として登場したわけではない。冷静に考えれば或る意味当たり前のことに改めて気付かされ、著者の思考の柔軟さに瞠目しました。ただ、現在の肉食動物とサルを通しての記述にかなりの紙数を割いており、化石人類の記述がやや少ないなという印象もありました。化石人類そのもののについても、もう少し詳細に語ってほしかったとも思います（これは仕方の無いことかも知れませんが）。

しかし、そうは言いながらも、その現在の肉食動物とサルの記述も大変興味深いものが多く、楽しんで読むことができました。博物誌や歴史に興味をお持ちの方なら、一読の価値は十分にあると思います。

どこかで自分をその他動物と区別して考えて、自分（たち）を特別な存在と考えてしまう。それは人としての傲慢とか、そういうことではなく普通に先進国で生活していれば、人が食べられるというのはＢ級ホラー映画の中でしか見聞きしないこともあるし、地球環境そのものに影響を与える存在としての人間というようなニュースが溢れて自然と地球の支配者という意識を刷り込まれていることがある。

…そんな既成概念を真っ向から覆すのが当書となっている。

進化理論においても人の淘汰圧として性淘汰はクローズアップされるようになって久しいが、捕食者の存在を念頭に、人もそれこそガゼルと同様に「食われる側」としての自然淘汰圧が働いていたというのはまさに衝撃である。もちろん、未だ「狩る側」の存在としての人間種というのが学術的大勢を占めているという留保はふされているが、陸でも水でも空でもこれでもか、これでもかと証拠をあげられていくと読み進めるうちに既成概念が揺らいでいくのがわかる。

また、そのような小難しいことを考えずともハイエナ、コモドオオトカゲやワニなどなどにぱくっと食べられている人間のことを知るだけでも存分に楽しめます。
