映画『男たちの大和』のノベライズ。映画の小説版だから、それほど細やかな心理描写はなされていない。だが、太平洋戦争末期という時代背景がそれを補ってあまりある効果を出している。大和の戦歴のほとんどは、死出の旅となる沖縄水上特攻である。この現実を背負った登場人物たちがいかなる心境でいたか。文章に著わされていなくとも自ずと分かってくる。今まで、太平洋戦争を舞台にし、日本軍の無謀さと、それに弄ばれた一般将兵の悲惨さを描いた小説は無数にある。特にこの作品では、戦艦大和だけに焦点を絞った点で、非常に分かり易い内容となっている。戦争がハイテク化し、強者のゲームとなった今、弱者の味わう苛烈さを哀しくも、真剣に生きようとした大和乗組員の凄まじいまでの叫びが読者の胸を打つ。中高生のティーンエージャーに読んで欲しい作品である。
