　現在、日本国内で手に入る唯一のダッド画集。
ダッドの代表作「お伽の樵の入神の一撃」は小学館世界美術大全などにも入っていますが、水彩画やスケッチなどまとまった作例を集めている例は他にありません。

　ダッドは時代で言うと、１９世紀後半・ロマン派が隆盛した頃のイギリス人画家です。アカデミーでは将来を熱望される最も優秀な学生の一人でしたが、１８４２年のエジプト旅行をきっかけにその精神に異常をきたし、自らの手で父親を殺害するに至ります。
以降、二度と正気を取り戻すことのなかったダッドは精神病院の中で人生をおくりました。作品の大部分は精神病院の中で制作されています。
　このような陰鬱な背景のため、ダッドの作品はどうしてもおどろおどろしい眼でみられがちです。なかなか一般の知名度が上がらないのもそのせいかもしれません。
　しかし、作品の魅力は抗いがたいものがあります。
独特の、生気が失われたまるで夢の中のような色彩。植物などに代表される精緻な描き込み。
その中で時間は止まり、人物たちは与えられた役を永遠に演じ続ける役者のようです。全集系の本で「お伽の樵~」等を見かけ、ダッドの世界に魅せられた人にはぜひお薦め。
