1956年広島生まれ。テレビディレクター、映画監督、作家。98年、自主制作ドキュメンタリー映画『A』を発表、ベルリン映画祭に正式招待される。続編『A2』は、山形国際ドキュメンタリー映画祭にて審査員特別賞、市民賞をダブル受賞。2006年、TV作品『森達也の「ドキュメンタリーは嘘をつく」』が、日本民間放送連盟賞・特別表彰部門「放送と公共性」で優秀賞を受賞(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

小学校のホームルームから始まり、死刑反対へつながる筋道は破綻のない実に見事なものだと思う。子どもに向かって語りかけるような口調も悪くない。森が嫌いな読者はきっとかんに障るんだろうけど。。。

特に個人的には森達也はなぜ裁判員制度について何も言わないんだろうと思っていたから、待ってましたという気分。言われている内容はそれほど独自のものではないと思うが、そこから死刑反対へつなげていく論理がすばらしいと思う。

この世の中にはたくさんの善人と少数の悪人がいるというわけではない。そんなことを考えるのは漫画やハリウッド映画の見過ぎである。漱石の｢こころ｣じゃないが、普通の人が悪いことをするから、人間は恐ろしいのだ。森の｢死刑｣を読んだときはまだ確信が持ちきれなかったが、今はぼくも死刑に反対したいし、できると思う。

死刑そのものについて書かれているのは最終の4章だけで、死刑を生み出した政治的歴史的背景や冤罪・無罪推定と報道、裁判員制度の欠陥や矛盾、95年のオウム事件や９．１１の後に不安に駆られた多くの人が治安維持の観点から厳罰化を叫ぶようになった事など、いわば外枠から死刑・殺刑制度について解説している。< /div>

　著者は理由が何であれ人を殺すこと自体に反対であり、結論としては、「人はどんなときでも人を殺してはいけない。」と結んでいる。
　勿論その理由にしても挙げてはいるのだが、死刑存置派にとっては生ぬるく映る面もあろう。
　ともあれ死刑に関して米のように執行場面に至るまで公開するのは、税を使っている以上当然だし、公開しない事によって不安をあおり、死刑を存続させたい政府に無批判に乗っかっていて良いのかとも指摘する。
　しかし、存置派は、「被害者遺族の身になり、リアルに想像できるのか?」との著者の問いに「当たり前じゃないか。」と答えるほどに想像力が欠如している。
　もしそうであるならば、死刑を望まない遺族がいれば彼らをバックアップし、死刑判決に対する再審請求なり反対運動もすべきではなかろうか?

　本書は中高生向きであり分かりやすいが、物足りないと感じるむきもあろう。
　そんな読者は、著者と存置派の藤井誠二との共著である「死刑のある国ニッポン」 をお勧めする。

もともと子供にも解るように書かれているものだけに理解をし易いはず
裁判員制度が続いていくならば、是非、今の小中学生にも読んでもらいたい
大人になるといつ直面するかわからない事実が、具体的に想像出来るはず・・
感情だけの甘い論理で命の大事さを説くより、
この本は現実を身近に感じることが出来て、
人の｢死」を考えることが出来ると思います
大人の方は、同著者の｢死刑」の方が、よりお薦めかも・・
