この二年間で、長崎では子どもの殺人事件が二件ありました。
そのことに絡めて、顔の見えないインターネットの掲示板での会話の是非や、
信仰や歴史について主人公アキが考えていきます。

「私たちの本音」が意地悪だからといって、その本音を相手にぶつけてもいいものなのか？
いろいろなことについて、きれいごとを言わずにごまかさずに、大人は話しているのでしょうか？

二十年ほど前、作者の長谷川集平さんは長崎を訪れた際に「本物の子ども」と出会って、
そこに住もうと決めたのだそうです。
彼らの明るさの理由が、この本に少しだけ描かれています。
長崎の歴史や風土を、わたしはもっと調べたくなりました。

長崎に魅せられ、彼の地に住むようになった長谷川さんの、これは長崎への
祈りであり託すべき希望の物語。
作品の中には、現代の子どもを取りまく厳しい現実が渦巻いています。
アキという主人公に託したさまざまな問題は、ひとつひとつの根が深く
しかも絡まりあっているものです。
友情、いじめ、親の離婚、戦争、歴史、信仰……アキの心の中で
だれかがいつも問いかける「ホントにそうかい？」ということばが、
アキの不安定な心を物語っています。
トモネをとおして知った信仰のあり方や神の目。
山口先生が語った長崎のキリスト教信者の迫害と、口減らしの歴史。
両親の離婚後、長崎に移り住んで２年になるアキが、次々と気づかされて
いくことは少なからず衝撃的なものでした。
痛ましい２件の事件のことも織りまぜつつ、現代と過去の二層が
折り重なる長崎を、アキの目で描きアキのことばで語ったところに
真実の手応えがありました。

「ひとりじゃないんだよ」
そう胸をはって言える明るさと強さに勇気を与えられました。
