　自分の属している文明社会を、全く異なる社会に属している人が見ると、一体どのように映るのだろうか。この本は、サモア諸島・ウポル島のツイアビという酋長が、20世紀初めのヨーロッパの国々をめぐり、彼らの文化と生活様式について集めてきた知識を島の民に語りかけた演説集だ。

　本書に出てくる酋長ツイアビの言葉は、心の奥まで入り込んでくる。ユーモアあふれる表現にしばしば笑ってしまうと同時に、われわれの社会に対して警告を発しているように思う。時に、われわれの社会は間違いだらけなのではないかと思えてきてしまうほど強い説得力を持っている。私にとって最も印象深かった言葉は「物がたくさんなければ暮らしていけないのは心が貧しいからだ」。大いに身につまされる言葉だ。「パパラギ」というタイトルは、サモアの島の言葉で「空を打ち破ってきた人--帆船に乗って現れたヨーロッパ人」のことを指すらしい。日本など、同じ文明社会に属す人々も含まれるだろう。

　先月開かれた気候変動枠組み条約第6回締約国会議（COP６)では、先進国の二酸化炭素削減目標などを定めた「京都議定書」が合意できずに終わった。「京都議定書」の遵守には、各国とも具体的、経済的な痛みを伴うだけに、ルールづくりで先進国どおしが激しく対立した。もし酋長ツイアビが、この会議を目にしていたら、今の世界を見ていたら、なんと言うだろうか。

最初から最後までパパラギ（ヨーロッパ人）の創った文明への
アンチテーゼだ。
その一字一句が忘れてしまったものを思い出させてくれる。
もちろん、この文明化された社会から我々は逃れられないし、
ますます文明化されていくし、我々自身がそれを求める。
しかし、その行き着く先は、意外にもこの本の精神に至る、と考える。

　この“パパラギ”とは狭義では白人、広義では文明社会に生きる人という意味です。そう、この本を手にする人はみんなパパラギです。

　この本にはパパラギとは一線を画した世界に住む人間がパパラギの世界=文明社会を見てどう感じたかが赤裸々に綴られています。
　全てが私たちパパラギの考えもしなかった視点で綴られています。
　そのため、私は最初何を言っているのかを理解するのに結構苦労しました。
　しかし、内容を理解できるようになると、かなり冷汗が出てきました…
　なぜ私が冷汗タラタラになったのかはこの本を読んでいただければ必ず分かると思います。

　因みに、この本の初版は1920年に出版されています。それにもかかわらず、この本の内容が古いと感じることは全くありませんでした。それどころか、新しいとさえ思うほどです。

　自分もパパラギだということを念頭に置いて是非この本を読んでみてください。きっと新しい発見があったでは済まないと思います。
