時代を追って「少女による、少女のための小説」を俯瞰した一冊。採りあげられているのは、あまりにも有名な『花物語』や、今に至るまでちょっと本好きの女の子なら誰でも読んだ(読む)ような翻訳少女小説『赤毛のアン』『若草物語』から、コバルト文庫全盛期の『なんて素敵にジャパネスク』や、ごく最近の『若おかみ』シリーズ、『マリア様がみてる』までと実に多岐にわたり、各執筆者の論も明晰。全体として非常に丁寧な仕事がなされている一冊だと感じる。
タイトルや題材の割にフェミニズムを押し付けるような論ではなく、読みやすいのもいい。あとがきで「＜少女小説＞はいつでも女の子たちの味方」と言い切る編者・菅聡子の言葉がすがすがしい。
中でも菅自身による氷室冴子論は白眉で、それにつけても氷室の逝去が惜しまれる。
